Some time back I researched golf links for a friend. Here is what I sent him:
I think you are right about a relative lack of highly rated golf courses on the east coast of Mexico. We rent a villa that sits in the Playacar development with the Van Hagge course we’ve talked about. I still haven’t played it. One article says it is the best/toughest on the Yucatan. That’s still a fairly easy distinction since by a recent count there are still less than 12 courses (including 9-holers and par 3s) in total in the 3 Mexican states of the Yucatan. In fact, there are almost more courses in Myrtle Beach than the whole country of Mexico. I’ve read articles that suggest that may be changing as many (18+) new courses are being built or planned near the Playa / Cancun area by designers like Norman, Weiskopf, Fazio, Dye, Nicklaus. Jack Nicklaus opened a course at the Moon Palace in 2003. It’s gotten some good reviews. It may be pushing 4 stars in some books. Here are a few links-related links ;-) here, here, here, and here. So, sunboundcanuck, I don't know exactly where Grand Gala Esmerelda is - but according to some directions I found on the web, it is near Secrets Capri. That puts it about 6 or 7 miles north of town. The most well known (and expensive) course is the Golf Club at Playacar, which is on the south side of town - figure 8 miles. But since I put this together I'm sure more courses have opened. Let us know what you find. |

We have a Villa on the Playacar course so I have played it many times and find it ot be very challenging( slope 148 from the tips)..Although expensive to some ($150 US) it is all inclusive ( food, drinks, carts range etc). Twylight rates are around $100 US which is really good value..We usually have lunch in the club house play golf with a few beverages on the course, then have dinner and some more drinks in the club house afterwards...

The best course in the area is undoubtedly El Camaleon. Its a new course in the Mayakoba development. The course is a Greg Norman Signature course and is absolutely incredble. In February of next year the PGA tour is having their first tournament ever in mexico and it is going to be held at this course (the Mayakoba Classic). So that tells you something of the quality of the course. The greens are still a bit too slow, but other than that everything is immaculate. It winds through the mangroves, the jungle, along cenotes and along the beach. If you are a golfer and are in the area it is a must play.
