The Maya Tankah/formerly Freedom Paradise

Has anyone stayed at this hotel? What is it like, where is it located (says on Tankah Beach, where is that exactly? how far from PDC?)
And what is this beach like, can you snorkel right in front of the hotel, is there a reef?
Is it easy to catch a colectivo from here into town or to Akumal or wherever?

And now that the name has changed, is it still being marketed as a 'fat friendly' hotel or is it now just a 'regular' hotel? It still has the old description 'people of all ages and sizes can feel welcome' on the site I am looking at.

We are looking for a budget deal for school break week next February and the other 2 couples want to go AI, so it is either here or ABR (which would be my choice) or the Real Playa del Carmen (already famililar with the latter 2).

Pretty sure it's the resort on the same road as the one you use to go to Casa Cenote. It's on the right side, where the road turns left. In other words, it's south of Casa Cenote, by about 1/4 mile.

The resort is 'older'. Never stayed there, but should be decent snorkeling!!

I'm with you...just booked ABR for Sept. 30-Oct. 7th.

I am not sure where Casa Cenote is ...but I looked at a map of the area and now I know where Tankha beach is at least. Thanks Rixx!
Now the hubby says IF we go to Playa, he thinks Akumal will be too quiet for the other two couples.... so we would likely stay at a hotel in town. But you will have a great time at the ABR, what a BEACH!

Freedom Paradise is about 20 min south of PDC right where the sign on 307 says Tankah Tres. The snorkeling up and down that beach is wonderful but the resort is fairly secluded. Nearest other AI that I remember is Sunscape Tulum. It is on the same road as Casa Cenote and Blue Sky. Or actually the back door to Freedom is on that road; the main entrance is just a hop over on the dirt frontage road. Have not stayed there but we walked by a few times on our way to Caletah Tankah when it was still open and it looked pretty nice. Don't know what's happened since the hurricane and I didn't know it had changed names! I just drove by it a couple of weeks ago when I stopped in at the Tankah Inn to say hi to Willie.

Thanks suzeq. I had heard that beach was quite nice, next time we go we will have to check it out.

Yes, it's confusing (the name thing). I found this:

Quote:
Welcome to the best kept secret in the Mayan Riviera!

Maya Tankah by Freedom Paradise is located on the quiet and beautiful Tankah Bay, “the place of free souls.” Maya Tankah by Freedom Paradise is a three-star hotel integrated into its ecological environment and characterized by exquisite Mexican-Caribbean architecture, tropical gardens with fountains and various swimming pools.

Maya Tankah by Freedom Paradise is the first and only size-friendly resort in the world. Here guests of all sizes and ages are welcome to fully enjoy their beach vacation. The hotel offers a friendly, familiar atmosphere, comfortable furniture, easy accessible swimming pools plus comfortable rooms and bathrooms. As in your own home, in our hotel you will feel free from worries. We are aware that you shouldn't wait to lose weight to start doing the things you like to do. Enjoy your life as much as you can today!

So it looks like they are calling it both names. I just noticed it on a travel sell off site I check regularly, and had never heard of it before; this carrier didn't offer it last year. It is the cheapest AI in the area, along with Sandos Caracol, Real PDC and the ABR- so me being budget minded I thought I would check it out.

lIt looks like they are still marketing it that way too, very odd. You would think that would turn off more potential guests than it would attract.

I think I had read shortly after it opened that they were having problems promoting it because it's hard to promote something to a specific audience and what's the cutoff point?

exactly what I was thinking!

sorry if my post had the usual font issues Denise- is that why you had to edit it? I always highlight and click on the 'remove text formatting' if I cut and paste.

No font issues. The link you provided was to a site that offered competing services to Playa.Info so the link was deleted as indicated in the "Reason" section of the edit notation.
