Quick, Need Help and Advice
Okay Peeps, I hope some of you can help me on this one. My wife and I leave for Playa on Sunday for a seven night stay at the Iberostar Quetzal. This will be our third visit to Playa in the last three years, and both of our previous trips have been to the Quetzal. Well, Funjet called yesterday and left a message on our answering machine that the Quetzal is overbooked and they would like for us to take a voluntary upgrade to the Iberostar Paraiso Maya. Now, I know that the Iberostar Maya is more expensive and I haven't talked to them yet to see if there is an additional cost involved to us or if they are just going to trade the Quetzal for the Maya with no cost. I looked on the website for the Maya and the place looks nice but being as we have never been there, it makes me a little nervous to agree to this without knowing. The website says that long trousers are required for men for dinner. Is this just in the dining rooms or do they require trousers for the buffet also. Is there a bar at the beach and a buffet style restaraunt close to the beach for lunch? My wife goes topless at the beach everday. Will this be a problem? Any advice would be appreciated on wether to take the upgrade or to keep our reservations at the Quetzal. Thanks, Paul and Leigh

Hey Paul & Leigh,
Love the last minute changes ! If they are requesting that you volunteer to upgrade there will be no additional charge. What I would do in your shoes is ask for some kind of additional gift certificate or whatever they do to make up for any extra expense you incur by being furthur away from Playa. There is a free shuttle every day, make sure you have schedule in your welcome package, but if you want to stay late in Playa the cab back is $18.00 As you have been to the Quetzal before I would say go for the upgrade! The Maya is a beautiful property and you can use all the pools, bars, places to eat at the entire complex, plus I believe all the rooms are junior suites. That said, here is what I know about the Maya: Long pants are required for dinner but all your dinners there are in air conditioned ala carte, not buffets. Of course if you want to go to the buffet at night you can walk over to the Del Mar or the Beach side and wear shorts. Of course there is a bar at the beach and buffets for breakfast and lunch. We just got back from a week at the Del Mar and believe me, there were plenty of topless gals at the beach. Plenty of chairs and Palapas too! Hope this helps, don't be nervous, go for it! Sharon |

We have stayed at Queztal, Lindo, and Del Mar. Never the Maya but it sure looked nice when we walked around it. Some suites even have private pools off the balconies. I would try to get one of those. Yes, long pants are required at the restaurants but they are also required at Queztal. You can wear shorts to the buffet. The beach is beautiful and yes bar/snack bar are there too. I would definitely upgrade if there is no additional charge and/or you don't mind being further from town. Maybe ask for a free round of golf if you like golf. My husband and friends golfed there and said it was awesome. I understand they have a shopping center now too. Go for it. Try something new. Have Fun!!!

There won't be any additional cost to you since they are bumping you to the Maya - which is a MUCH MUCH more expensive property. But I can tell you now that anything more than this upgrade won't be forthcoming. They won't give you "gift certificates" in addition to the upgrade, they'd rather leave you at the Quetzal than add anything else to their offer.
The only drawback is the fact you're a bit further from Playa, but with the shuttle, it's not the end of the world. Pants have to be worn at the ala carte restaurants, but that's no different than the situation at the Quetzal. All in all, this is a very good upgrade, and if I was you - I'd take it without hesitation. |

Take the upgrade & go to the Maya.. Having been at both the Quetzal & Lindo both, For the money spent "do not look a gift horse in the mouth"..The Quetzal is very nice, but the Maya is a step in class above. I have never stayed at the Maya but did stay at the Lindo while the maya was being constructed and would even take the Lindo as an upgrade over the Quetzal, let alone the Maya..
Lucky Dog!!! Enjoy!! |

Stayed at the Maya last year, this place is VERY nice. Actually stayed at the Eldorado Royale the first week and the Maya the 2nd week, its a good thing it was in that order or I would have not been a happy camper. I loved the Royale until we walked in the Maya and I was blown away, they didnt spare a dime on the place.....They also offer a free bus to take you into PLaya several times a day....
