We were there about a week ago and saw these impressive mall-like structures on the right hand side of Southbound 307, on the southern end of Playa. Now we know what it was. Saw the place right before we were pulled over by transit police for speeding, that is, going with the flow, about 19 km above the 80km limit. Sure enough had to dish out 600 pesos after talking it down from 1200, 800... The interesting thing was that two cars stopped, us and a local, but the oficiales deemed it sufficient to fleece a gringo and let the other go, now there must have some redeeming value to this decision. But back to the topic at hand, I wonder what it all means for the local small operations, now that places like Wallmart and Mega and other superstores have just been complemented by yet another super...? |

They had "roped" off that part of the mall and about 10 men were sweeping and mopping in front of Woolworth's. I inquired with security standing there and he said manana. So, let us know.

Trouble with this stuff is that it shouldn't bother tourists but it does bother tourists because in the end, tourists aren't so much concerned with the reality involved (Playa residents need more shops, or more competition in shops, or it's out of the way, etc) as the idea in their heads of what Playa should (and of course shouldn't) be. And that exchange back there on this thread shows that rather clearly, I think.

Well, we went on Saturday, but I did not see Woolworths. It must have been at the other end of the mall. There weren't any cars parked at that end, so I am guessing it wasn't open, yet. I tried to check it out, but with a two-year-old tugging my hand, I couldn't get too far.
