Playacar Palace VS Royal Porto Real
Anyone have any thoughts on this, looking to go in Oct.....Are both of these just a few minute walk to 5th? Do they stack up to each other evenly?(ive priced them out the exact same)....Mid 30s couple, still like to party (top shelf Tequilla a must)......

We really enjoyed the Royal, it is a beautiful place. We did see top shelf Tequila in the game room...which has snacks 24hrs, ping pong table, I think a pool table, self serve pop and a lot of bottles of liquor all self serve. In your room you also have full bottles of liquor, that tequila is kind of cheap though. Enjoy!

We stayed at Royal Porto April 29 to May 6. LOVED the place, it is just beautiful. Service very good, food very good, beach very good.Very close to shopping, eating, bars etc.Not a far walk at all. We plan to stay there on our future trips. You can use everything at Gran Porto across the street, but they can not come over to Royal Porto.I hear Gran Porto parties a bit more. We enjoyed the lobby bar (Royal Porto)every night, not much action going on though. Our age near 50.Enjoyed the beach everyday and walked down to webcam everyday to wave at coworkers back home!
Check out the room pictures on the web as the rooms are to die for! |

Playacar Palace
We stayed at the Playacar Palace in May and we are headed back in September. The service there is FANTASTIC. As far as tequila's go, what they had in the tequila service was brands including Don Julio, reposada and anejo, 1800, Sauza (Commemrative, Hornitos, and one other type). For margarita's I actually enjoyed the El Jimador. They had other top self liquor including Absolute Vodka, Tanguery (sp) Gin and other top self liquors. The beach is small but clean. The resort is very close to 5th, which we enjoyed going to every night and it is close to the ferry to Cozumel. The lounge that was open in the evening (the Luna Lounge) had great Thai appetizers. The hotel was very quiet in the evening except the nights they had karoke. We are in our early thirties.

We are in our mid 30's and went back and forth on these two as well and we decided on the Playacar Palace. The Royal really looks wonderful but I don't really like the U shape of the buildings, it seems that almost all of the Playacar rooms are facing the water and I enjoy sitting on the balcony early in the morning watching the sun come up.

How do the beaches compare? From the trip reports I've been able to find, it sounds like there was little to no beach at the Playacar Palace earlier this year, and there is now a "small beach". Are there palapas and chairs at the Playacar Palace?

There are no chairs or umbrellas on the beach, but they do provide bar service on the beach. The beach is narrow at one end of the hotel, but on the side closest to Senor Frogs the beach is wide and nice. They would have room to put chairs out, but had not yet.

thanks all or I guess I should say grassyass ! After much reading of trip advisor amongst other places it looks like we will be booking the Royal Porto, both look very nice and have great reviews but the Palace looks a tad stuffy. Also it seems the Royal gets the edge (with us anyway) with their Tekillya bar (nice wide variety of tasty samples from what I hear)........So anyone who might be there Oct 18-25th give a shout , we will be strolling the 5th area daily .....
PS: Thanks Sunseeker, it seemed a fitting name since Gracias always comes out grassyass for me (my wife says I have a small issue with growing up...Oh well!) Grassyass |

What type of "shade" is available at RPR beach? I have seen pictures with palapas on the beach (perhaps older pictures) and also pictures with no palapas but rather some sort of bed canopy setup. Being a fair-skinned Midwesterner, I'm wondering if there will be sufficient shade to keep me from becoming a lobster. Also, the pool area seems to be fairly unshaded as well?

There are palapas on the beach, and umbrellas around the pool. The sunbeds have a canopy over the top. There isn't a ton of shade so depending on how busy the resort is, you might have to get up a bit early to guarantee yourself some.
