Stem Cell Veto

So Bush uses his VERY FIRST veto to veto the stem cell law. Most polls have 70% of Americans supporting stem cell research.

Just exactly how out of touch is this guy?

I even had a right wing republican friend of mine send me an unsolicited email basically letting me know this was the final straw for him - he is now officially disgusted with Bush.

For those who do not know, my son was born through IVF. Although, as it turns out, we did not have any frozen blastocysts left over at the end of the process, we would have been GLAD to have donated this tissue for research if it would have been able to help cure Parkinsons, diabetes, etc.!

When will this horrific nightmare end. '06 is a start and hopefully '08 will usher in a new age of enlightenment and end these dark ages in which we currently live.

Not looking to get too much into a pro/anti Bush debate as that is a pretty lopsided debate these days, but a BIGGER problem is that there does not seem to be enough support to get the 2/3 majority vote to Override the Veto.
Guess it is still a pretty controversial issue. Personally, I would be pro for the stem cell research for a set period of time to prove that it can generate the necessary medical advancements (or even better, a breakthru) needed to fight some of these nasty diseases.

Its not like he outlawed the research. It can still be done, privately. As with many types of research, the Government won't be investing. Trying to make it into a "he doesn't care about my disease" issue, is pure politics. It will work, I am sure, as the proponents have framed the debate, well.

I could find 70% of the American public to agree with me on just about anything, if I phrased it right.

I know very little about it but this was a quick yahoo hit:
Stem Cells
and it says:
Recent research has shown that primitive stem cells from umbilical cord blood have similar powers and health promoting benefits as do embryonic stem cells but without the ethical and safety issues.

I have no idea about the autheniticity of the study.

Agreed. I took a straw poll of 10 people and 7 agreed with me = 70% in agreement.

I work for a children's research hospital so I am going to be a proponent of what does the most for those in need without having major "ethical" concerns.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions and beliefs and hopefully we are all of one mindset that we all want to find cures for disease. Unfortunately not everything is a black/white issue.

I'm pretty ignorant on the subject but if a stem cell is a stem cell, I think I'd vote for the cord cells......I mean, I get all freakin weepy when I drop and egg

It is a political issue, rather than a scientific one. Someone saw an opening and decided to push science that has not been proven worthwhile, because they can paint their opponent as "uncaring", if he votes against it. I am betting 70% of the American public doesn't even know what a stem cell is.

Add to that, the fact that you can make abortion look a little more attractive, and you have a good midterm issue.

The whole thing is so transparent, even I can see through it.

Man, I used to hate midterms. Now I just have to deal with performance reviews.
