Since when is it American to lock people in a box for 3 years?

Did we *really* need the Supreme Court to tell us (or, more specifically, to tell mad King Bush) that it not right to lock people in a box for three years without hearing or trial?

What has America come to? Where are we as a nation? Where are we as a people? I would suspect that our founding fathers are spinning in their graves, while despotic leaders like Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and yes, even Hitler, are grinning away in Hell...

There are some events in our history about which we as Americans should feel truly ashamed. First and foremost, of course, is slavery. Also, Plessey v. Fergeson's mealy mouthed "separate but equal" holding (later remedied by my number one legal hero, Thurgood Marshall). Sacco and Vanzetti, the internment of the Japanese during WWII, etc.

It is my opinion (and my MOST sincere hope) that this period of American history will be a black stain on America's proud reputation of leading the world in the causes of freedom and justice.

Nope...we could have left them in their dirt floor caves waiting for a Laser Guided Bomb to knock on their door instead of giving them three squares and safety from being turned into a grease spot.

So we are being "humanitarian" by locking these SUSPECTS away for three years without a trial?

I stand by my statement. This episode goes against everything America stands for and will be another of the very few black marks on America's proud history.

You assume their guilt without trial. That is not the way our system works and I for one am very proud of that fact. Dictators and other fanatical leaders deliver punishment without trials....established democratic republics guided by the rule of law are not supposed to do that. These principles are the very thing that separates us from those we intend to fight and should be our guiding principles.

You continue to ignore many of the basic tenets of the Constitution, the UCMJ and the Geneva Convention. Each of these systems were established, or agreed upon, to protect Americans in the long run. It seems very short-sighted to ignore this fact. One would hope that one day someone does not lock you or I up for three years without a trial to prove our guilt or innocence, or for that matter, torture or mistreat you or I captured while serving our country.

Hate to burst your bubble...these are terroists, not part of army of a real country. So the Geneva Convention does not apply. By the way, they would like to kill you as much as me or any other American, or can I be so bold to say Christian.

Hey, I love it when you burst my bubble!...IF they are deemed to be terrorists, I say lock them away! The issue here is that a LOT of people were rounded up quickly, for good reason, post 9/11 and locked away on the SUSPICION that they may be terrorists. Don't you think we should determine this one way or another via the laws that we American's established to guide our conduct as a nation? May I be so bold to say.....Wouldn't this be the more Christian thing to do?

You are the lawyer. Just what is it that we are going to charge them with State or Federal What country do they represent that is a member of the Geneva convention Do we invent some sort of new court that the Supreme Court will just strike down as illegal As usual, Stewart, you are all about complaining about Bush, and offering no solution. So, lets just cut them loose and let them live next door to you. We trust that you have all of our best interests at heart, and will keep an eye on them.

I am with you PlayadelSol, let us put them (alleged terroists, being politically correct, or course) in his area and then we don't have to worry about any bombings in ours.

Many of them are not terrorists. Just humans like you and me. They just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Without a trial we will never know. We know that from people being freed from Guantanamo. Don't you read the news from other countries?

Article 3 of the Geneva Convention applies to combat that is NOT a conflict between two countries.
