Denver Botanic Gardens - Photos

Cheryl and I spent yesterday at the Denver Botanic Gardens. Beautiful and very peaceful place. Thought I would share some photos...

Thank you all for the kind comments. As Thor mentioned, the telephoto was on my camera most of the day. To be specific, the first three photos were taken with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. The last five were taken with one of my all-time favorite lenses; Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8. It's kind of a beast to carry around, but is usable in so many different situations.

Here's another one from the Botanic Gardens of my favorite "flower:"

Mikey, for example, this photo shows the beauty of what macro photography can do. The depth of field is very small, less than an inch. As you can see from this shot, I focused on the middle part of the flower using manual focus. AF is virtually unnecessary with macro shots. Trust your own eyes and remember to put your camera back to AF after you're done! The aperture was f/2.8 as I wanted everything else blurred except for the brown part of the flower. Shutter speed was 1/1600th of a second. I carried my tripod the whole day but never used it, so this shot, like all the others was hand held.

Here's another one from yesterday showing that same depth of field macro can achieve:

Put that Sigma on your body, go out and take some photos at different settings of the beautiful garden you have outside your house. Come inside, put 'em on your computer and see what different settings do to produce different results. If you have Photoshop, be sure to utilize the "File Info" command under the "File" menu.

Manitou,
Thanks so much for posting the great photos. You have a gift with your photography. My favorite from above is the lilipads with the one white flower. My father too was very active with photography and as part of his estate, I inherited a few lenses. Unfortunately I haven't saved enough yet to get one of the new digital SLR's, but do plan on having one by year's end.
I am really looking forward to playing with the Sigma 50-500 macro I have and as a standard I am using a Tamron 28-300mm. Have to make sure everything is compatible with a new digital body. The camera is a Minolta and the only research I have done is on Nikon, Canon, and Pentax mounts. Not sure if the Minolta has its own mount or if it uses Pentax (I know it does not use Canon or Nikon). I have been looking at the Pentax *iST to start.
