Hello from Wisconsin

Just signing in for the first time and I'm dying to get some info. fast! My husband and I are traveling Sept.13th - Sept. 20th to the Riviera Maya, Cancun, Mexico. Demographics is not my strong point. We are traveling for his 40th birthday and our 13th wedding anniversary. We have 4 kids and we have NEVER went anywhere alone for more than a couple days. With 4 kids ranging from 16 - 2 you can imagine there's not a lot of time. We are so excited!!!

We have not booked yet. We have an agent but we are trying to decide where to go. We have it down to two maybe three, Catalonia, RIU Playacar, and Sunscapes Puerto Adventuras. I have been on trip advisor a lot and have not heard great things about Sunscapes so a bit leary on that one but it's so cheap! Us like many want a nice beach, good food, and good drinks. We've heard the beach at the RIU is nice but very busy with people trying to sell you stuff. We've heard the food is good at the Cat and for the price it sounds great. I don't like that there's not a fridge with bottled water in your room. Argh! We have traveled minimum times, usually just for work and not pleasure. We just want to relax, have some fun, and go on a couple excursions.

I'm so excited to get this thread out finally (after battling with my username and password not working) and hear from some people that can offer first hand experience. Thanks a bunch!

Hello, fellow wisconsinite

can only speak about RIU playacar. Stayed next door sring '05 and I didn't see
much hassle of tourists on any of the beaches there. Wife and I spent much time on beach, and were never bothered. Have you checked with the boards resident travel guru, Shammy ??We used her in '05 for our 1st time and she was great, works with your budget and had some fresh ideas re places to stay.

Good luck, relax, enjoy !!

I would go with a place like the RIU in Playacar. Playacar is like a suburb of PDC and an easy walk or cab ride into town if you choose to go. We have stayed at the Gala Playacar 6 times and will be at the Iberostar Tucan next door when we return in April. The RIU is next to the IB. The beaches are the best in that area and our expereince has been not a lot of vendors at least at the AIs. We've had nothing but good things to say about the Gala and have seen lots of positive reviews of the RIUs and IBs on these boards. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks Tammy! I just wanted you to know that I'm Tammy too! We can't wait to go. We have never been away alone and are very excited. If you know any great restaurants and some great excursions we could do that would be helpful.

Welcome from another Wisconsin-ite!

You're going to love Playa! Take full advantage of this site, you'll get great info. I spent a lot of time here before my first trip and by the time we got off the ADO bus, I felt immediately at home I think in part because I already knew where to go and had some connection to the real people here.

For tours, check out James and Ana's trips right here at Playa.info.

Have a great first trip but be warned, Playa is addictive. I'm planning my 5th trip!

Hi Tammy,
You will definitely find a wealth of info on this site, just use that "search" function. I agree with equinenut about tours, go through Playa Info with James & Ana. Check out the Changarros y mas section to find out all about food & restaurants. Our favs while we were there was Chicago Don Jose for dinner, Playa Maya beach club for lunch (great shrimp tacos!), and Sur (we had a unique pizza there). Hope this helps!
