No reservations?
My husband and I have stayed in Playa 5 times now. We were wondering how crazy it would be to just arrive the second week in January, drag a suitcase and see what we get for places to stay. Maybe I should make reservations for the first night. It seems such a daring feat for us 40 somethings that are used to having all our ducks in a row. There are so many fabulous places to stay on or near 5th maybe we should just "fly by the seat of our pants" and see what happens. Are we nuts to do this in January?

I believe January is high season, and do you really want to spend valuable Playa time walking around looking for a place to stay?? Maybe that's your idea of having an adventure, but it sure isn't mine. I'd rather have a place booked ahead of time and be able to toss our suitcases in the room and then go looking for a cold margarita.

Have been to playa many times in Jan. Feb. and March. The first couple of weeks after New Years week are definitely the least crowded. There would be no problem finding a place during that time. Every week after gets progressively busier. It's a good idea though to book the first night so you have a place to store your bags. We always stay at the Tropical Casa Blanca on 1st ave near calle 12. They have nice clean rooms and a really nice pool area, for around $60 a night. There are many nice and inexpensive places nearby. .
