Fishing
When people go out on fishing boats, what do they do with their catch? We stayed at GCB in June, where there are lots of fishing boats. People would go out and catch some big fish, I was wondering what they do with the fish. Do the resorts cook them for you?

I take them to restaurants and the cook them for me. The restaurant will get some of the fish if its a large one, and I pay for the vegatables etc.
Remember that not all fishing trips give the fish to you.... Check and agree the deal before you depart on your fishing tour! Last edited by JEZ; 08-13-2006 at 05:06 PM. |

Always agree the details first to avoid disapointment on both sides. El Oasis will cook them for you, and another place I go is on the corner of first street and tenth avenue, | will add the name once I have checked the spelling.... |

In case someone is wondering: On the fishing trips you book through Playa.info, you get to keep the fish you want (except bill fish, that are fished on a catch-and-release basis). Check out the boats on this page.

A friend went fishing here and caught 50lbs of mahi-mahi!! He gave a lot of it to the captains to take to their families and the rest, he took to La Tarraya on the beach at 2nd to cook up. He invited us and some others (10 total, I think) and the cost was 40 or 45 pesos per person for dinner. You go earlier in the day to give them the fish, tell them what time you're coming back for dinner, and with how many people, and you choose how you want the fish prepared. My friend chose grilled filet of fish with mojo de ajo (garlic sauce). They don't charge you to cook the fish, but they charge for the sides they prepare: salad, rice, salsa/chips, beans, and I think one soft drink each was included in the cost. Anything extra you had to pay for, plus tips. It was a delicious meal!

If you catch something good to eat, ask the crew to clean and fillet the fish for you. They do this quickly on the beach right off the boat or on the dock! You should remember this when tipping the crew. I dont know if you can do this at a resort, but I have walked right into El Pirata Bar and Restaurant at the Costa del Mar Hotel next to the ******, with fillets, and they have cooked them up right away for a price per person. Nothing like eating your own catch on the beach! Good luck

fishing in December?
We are coming down & staying 6 nites at the Xaman Ha condos 12/13. Hubby & I want to do a 1/2 day fishing trip. What's the fishing like that time of year? Wish we could go in spring, but we are farmers & this is one of our few vacation times of the year!

I went in spring break 1999 with college roomates. It was long and boring. We only caught two fish. The first one was a tuna however a shark ate it before we reelled it in. The head was 18 inches long. The last fish we caught was a mahi-mahi but it was only 14 inches long. I'm not sure if I want to go again, because the results were not too happening. We did not bother to ask if we could have the meat because there was not much to asked for.

Well, as the saying goes, the sport is called 'fishing' and not 'catching'. There are no guarantees in nature and a boat can have a bad day one day and a good day the next. Of course it also depends on what season you're here. Having said all that, it is rare that a boat comes back empty handed here. Fishing usually range from good to fantastic. And you start fishing as soon as you head out from the marina/beach - no transportation hauls to get to the fish.

In June of this year, my wife and I went out on the panga arranged here and landed 24 fish. We brought a grouper, a yellow tail and a trigger fish back to our condo and ate well for the remainder of that week. The captain and crew took the rest and are either still eating those fish or sold some off
