SKYPE CORDLESS
I have heard good things about that phone, although recently it appears some of the XP updates are creating problems.

I was thinking of getting that for my wife. I would like her to start using Skype when she calls her mom in Ireland.

Maybe someone could correct me if I am wrong on the incoming calls for free, but that is the belief that I am under.

Also if you are going to use your computer, using a bluetooth earpiece or a headphone system to talk into and listen on, reduces some echo issues and makes it just like talking on a regular phone.
Yep, Skype to Skype is free. Calling from your cell phone to here (incoming calls) is free also (except uses your minutes...good thing for free nights and weekends!).

If you purchase credit, you get a number and voice mail too (unless that was a limited time offer)! I love Skype...it's so easy to use. I believe that outgoing calls are .05 cents a minute to the US.

800 numbers are free, but I don't have much luck with them. Anyone else have problems? I can't call my credit card 800 number or a few others. It cuts in and out a lot.

Good idea...I do that with iChat and iSight (you know I'm an Apple person!)! That works with my family since we all have Macs, but Adam doesn't (I still like him though). We need to find a camera that will work for him using IM (we normally use MSN, but it doesn't support video on Macs). I haven't looked much yet though. Thanks!

New Voip just released

Here is a new Skype alternative, it was just released last week. You can use your own phone. There is a free 5 minute call at the site, and you get around a $3.00 credit when you first sign up. It depends on what country you sign up from. You get up to 5 free calls from each location you try it from. That can be increased probobly by clearing your internet cache. It's also free from user to user in the US, Canada, Mexico, and the EU.

Question! I've been using Skype for a long time, but I have NEVER had luck with calling 800 numbers. There is too much static and they can't hear me. Anyone know a fix?!

This could be arranged. Where does your mom live and how good of a cook is she?

We have been using Skype since about Oct./Nov. Mostly good experiences with it. I find the Skype to Skype can have some delay in the sound at times so that you can get an echo.

Using Skype Out however has worked great. We used it in Mexico to call the kids back home through the computer and at home we have the Linksys cordless phone that we use to make all of our calls to Julie's mom in the UK.

Skype has just added a "connection fee" for all Skype Out calls, but it is still cheaper than using our land line to call the UK.

Just wondering how long that language will make sense to anyone. I mean already you have many situations in which you need to specify that that's what you're talking about, with phone increasingly understood to mean some sort of cell/mobile unit...

Good point.

Another item becoming useless: 800 #'s. Since (same country) long distance is becoming free on traditional phones as well as on cell phones.
