Police and emergency officials are responding to a chemical leak at the Reichold Chemical Company and have and evacuated the area around the company’s site at 144 Fork Branch Road.

State police have said the spill originated from a rail car that has forced the closure of U.S. 13 in the area of Del. Tech. at Reichold Chemical Company, State Police Spokesperson Jeff Whitmarsh said.

Tim Colendaniel, Cheswold Volunteer Fire Company, said officials have evacuated a five-mile radius.

Will keep ya posted...

Second phone call saying to stay inside while the tv crawler says evacuate! Gotta love news too... phone call came 1 hour after first posted news report, one site says evacs started at 6:30pm and another says 8pm
I'm saving the reports to take into the paper I work for on Monday, maybe it could be an interesting story?!?! I'm just an ad rep so I don't know what editorial will think.
I figure I'll just hang tight but my dog is goig to not be happy if he needs to use a training pad in the morning!

:p Not afraid of them but we have an office assistant I'd take as back up any time! Seems they're still recommending for people to stay inside but I'm also seeing people going out to work and such. I don't think I'm too worried since they're not returning. Besides, I have a bachelorette party to go to later that I wouldn't miss for the world

When the people venture outside and don't return, that's when you're SUPPOSED to worry!!!

Seriously, glad to hear things are clearing up...

Down here in Houston (mere minutes from Pasadena, Texas City, etc.) we are REAL familiar with the hazards of chemical spills, leaks, etc.

That's probably going to be more dangerous than the chemical spill!

Thanks! Now I'm all nervous again!
Really, thanks for the input! The biggest frustration was how poorly this was handled. Discrepency in time between the discovery & calls going out, etc. There is a commentary section at the end of the update if you want some idea. I've heard even more from friend and neighbors about the calls and lack of them!

Knapthyme and said "Bride to be" left my house about 4:00 today with my wife in tow. So, she is safe from the Chemical spill....I'm not so sure that the Rehoboth Beach area is going to be safe from them though! Whatta crew!
