Winders xp
OK I'm addicted to craigslist. I picked up a PC too cheap. The woman had just reformatted it and put Winders 2000pro on it. I am trying to install a copy of XP on it. I have installed XP before. I can't remember what to choose to reformat the disk completely before the install. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks In Advance, Lucky

Do you have the retail version of Windows XP? If you bought it at Best Buy, Circuit City or CompUSA, etc... that's what you'd have. If so, I can't help you!! The retail version was created for end-users to upgrade an older operating system and really isn't recommended. It's rare that a manufacturer would use anything but the OEM version. I regularly install Windows XP (OEM version) and perform no less than 5 per week.
If you have the OEM version, put the Windows CD in the drive... you'll need to make sure that the BIOS is set to boot from the CD and not the internal hard drive. Once the install disk has booted you'll have the option to perform a full install. As part of that process, you should delete the Windows2000 partition or any other partitions that appear. After it's deleted, just create it again and let the install process format with NTFS. After the format (highly recommended) it will automatically install the operating system, asking for your input as well as the Product Key somewhere along the way. Of course, after the full install, you'll need 1-2 hours getting the remaining patches installed from the Internet. Jimmy Last edited by JimmyMN; 08-26-2006 at 09:42 AM.. |

Thanks so much for the help! I pick these PCs up cheap and then uprgrade etc as a hobby. Once I get everything working properly I give them to less fortunate families. I'd really like to use laptops but the drives on the old ones tend to be small and parts tend to be expensive. Thanks Again, Lucky Edit] What do you think of this item available locally in Central Texas: http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/198465619.html
