Comida corrida
It's authentic.
It's economical. It's often delicious. We talk about comida corrida often. In fact, I was just looking for a link to more information, but my Google search showed us already on the first page, so I guess I'll just quote us. We love eating comida corrida! Well, that's actually paraphrasing. It's traditionally the big meal in Mexico. We eat lunch later in Mexico. Usually about 2pm is prime time for comida corrida. There's more general stuff following the above link. If you have a favorite place, let us know. I'll start naming some more of my faves here shortly.

Ok, I'll start.
First off, a typical Comida Corrida consists of - a bowl of soup, usually a broth - a main course, choose from a menu of typical Mexican dishes, such as Chile Relleno, Pollo con mole, Pollo pibil etc - tortillas, beans and rice - water or fruit water, as much as you want Comida Corrida is usually about 25-30 pesos and it’s served between 1ish and 4ish pm. It’s excellent value for money and very tasty. My absolute favorite on the Comida Corrida scene is La Casa de Piedra (The Stonehouse). It's way off La Ruta Turista, on Avenida 35 between Calle 30 and 32. The facade is made of stones, so you'll spot it. They have very tasty food estilo Muy Mexicano. They often have lentil soup for starters, which is almost enough in itself, and some great crispy Flautas de pollo. |

My new favorite is Aquimichu, which is on 38th street, heading down to the beach. It's just before you get to La Cueva del Chango, so you can find it on our map.
I cannot say enough. Excellent, inspired authentic sauces, delicious main dishes. HOMEMADE tortillas!!!!! What a difference that makes. It's rare to get that for comida corrida. They even have cheap Coronitas. Try it out!

El Fogon--new location?
My sig other (Mr Tim) says that he ate last week at El Fogon, but not the one on 30th. He says to get there they crossed the new park, so maybe it's on 20th? James, others--is this true? Where exactly is it?

I can't remember if Judy is right or not. We ate at both El Fogon restaurants. Although the menu was the same, We found that the one towards, or on 26th, seemed to have better food for some reason, and we ate at that one quite a few times. It is really good food....And they will add or subtract whatever you want to the orders quite happily. It was one of our highlight spots while we were there. Look up Andy766 on here for some other great restaurants...he wowed us with the places he took us to.

I had poc chuc today at Los Almendros on 6th and 10th Avenue. It rocked. You couldn't find a more authentic regional dish anywhere else, I'm convinced. My lunch cost 35 pesos with drink.
Los Almendros (no relation to the famous chain of these restaurants in Mexico City and Merida) is still run by the same family. Now they have pollos asados too, and they looked really good.

Los Almendros
I agree! Los Almendros is awesome!! The owners are very nice. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. You get a nice stack of corn tortillas with the comida corrida order, plus the rice and beans that come with lunch are wonderful!!! If you get a craving for french fries, order some at Los Almendros; they are fresh cut potatoes...none of the frozen stuff.

I used to go to this place with my dad in the afternoon for comida corrida, but I don't remember where it is, or actually if it still exists, the last time I ate there was in 1999. It was a place where they didn't speak any english, and Mama and her kids would take us into the kitchen and we'd point to what we want. I think it maybe was called el correo, or something like that, does anyone maybe know what I'm talking about? I know it's not a lot of information, but I'm returning dec 29 and would love to find it again. I imagine maybe strolling the streets I could find it.
