I like hardwood floors, but my dogs screwed up a section of it. Peepee and puke. Are bamboo floors durable? Like Stew mentioned, hardwood floors can be refinished and if there is a warped section, that can be replaced.
Right now, we have carpet...it is a big pain to keep it clean. |

I love the warm feel that hardwood brings to a home. But, as a realtor who has seen (and smelled) what animals can do to hardwood and carpet, I would say ceramic tile. You can put heaters under them so they are warm to walk on. Just my two cents

Porcelain tile. That is what we have. Love it!!!
It is physically warmer than ceramic, cleans easily, and is more difficult to scratch than wood or ceramic tile. It also comes in many cool colors, patterns now. They can do some fantastic stuff with painted cement. You can always put a floor on top of it later...Easy clean up... Or like Caramba said...very thick hardwood floors with no varnish (varnish turns wierd colors with animal urine ...My grandfather and uncle were in the hardwood floor business too ) |

I love the look of the acid stained concrete... we are debating what to do next year or the year after... three dogs, one of them very neurotic and into "marking" things, have been an issue with our flooring... we have carpet and hardwoods... the hardwoods have definitely stood up better than the carpets...

I have Laminate...Very nice with a distressed barn oak grain...
It has so far survived 2 kids, 3 cats & a puppy with flying colors...My carpet however is wrecked...I'd rethink Laminate. Hardwood is nice but who actually gets around to refinishing it every couple years... |

(and besides.... I used to laugh when Gizmo as a kitten would do somewhat the same thing. Years ago I lived in a small studio apartment and couldn't have a headboard on the bed or else it would block the door. So I'd put my pillows up against the wall to make it look nice. I'd toss a kitty toy on the bed between the pillows, and Giz would run full tilt between the pillows and crack her little kitty skull on the wall **smack!!** I'd laugh and do it again.... But I'm not proud of it!! ) |

Thanks for all the input. Hubby is just dead set against Laminate even though we looked at some that looked great. Our dog is a shelter dog that's about 6 years old and had her collar grown into her neck when we adopted her, so I don't think she had a lot of constructive guidance when she was being potty trained. For the most part she's trained she just has an accident every once in a while. I think a lot of the mess she made on the carpet was done before she was fixed and she was marking things...didn't know girls did that, but I guess they do.
The stained concrete floors look really cool, but I bet they are really expensive and would require a lot of support over a basement. We may have to kennel the girl when we're gone. I just hate doing it to her. She could probably care less. |

Hey Nerak,
Why not do as our compatriot Henry David Thoreau from Walden times would have advocated? More specifically, leave it with beaten dirt and ornament it with a fresh blanket of leaves every day. The latter should be relatively easy now that Autumn is upon us. In short, you'd be providing an umparallel haven for the dog, and isn't that what dog owners/servants are supposed to do for their pets/masters? ![]() |
