Tequila? What's considered the finest?

I'm not a big fan of Tequila thus, I don't know what's considered the best out there. If you were to ask me about Scotch, Rye, Wine... I definantly know the answer but when it comes to Tequila, I'm lost.

Going to RPR in a few weeks and I hear they keep the good stuff out of reach, so you have to ask for it by brand name.
If I'm going to get hammered on it, I might as well go out with the best available.... :p
What's the best out there?
Thanks

Well I'm no expert but I like Don Julio 1942. Very smooth stuff. Scott (our resident tequila expert) has more experience and will give you many suggestions. How about it Scott?

If you are not a tequila fan, don't feel like you have to drink it. I would suggest you at least try the local drink xtabentun. It is a rum with honey and anise flavor.

I'm not a huge tequila fan either, but I tried the Don Julio Reposado (only because no Anejos were available at our resort) and found it quite good. Still prefer a glass of Basil Hayden, but "when in Rome".

I'd be very suprised in Porto Real had anything better than Herradura, Centenario, or Don Julio anejos.........all three are generally considered very good. If they did carry Don Julio 1942, that would be a no brainer...but at a cost of $100/ bottle at the liquor store or $20 a shot at the bar, I just don't see them serving it at an AI

Herradura Anejo is my fave. To me it tastes more like a fine cognac than tequila.

if you ever see El Tesoro Paradiso at the bar (you won't find it in Mexico though), you might spend the $$$ and give it a shot....aged 4 years in cognac barrels.

I really like Centenario, for a relatively inexpensive tequila. One thing is sure, I cannot drink regular Cuervo anymore, since I started drinking Centenario. Even the smell makes me sick.
