safety snorkeling reef at coco beach

I want to do some snorkling at coco beach.
I can see the reef from the beach.
It,s not very far But lots of boats in front of reef.
I guess they want protection from the waves.
Is it safe to swing there with all the boats in the water.
I mean u get hit by a boat and bam youre dead!!!
Is there a protected zone to access reef from beach?

thx

I wouldnt snorkle there without some kind of marker buoy to warn the boats of my presence but that's just me.

When we stayed at Grand Coco Bay in July, I didn't for a moment consider going out to the reef. IMO.... there's way too much boat/waterbike traffic around there. I just wouldn't be able to relax and enjoy the snorkeling.

I tend to go early-ish in the morning.
I also make it a point to splash-kick often, so people can see where I am.
If I hear a boat/jetski motor while my face is in the water, I make it a point to look up and see where said boat/jet-ski is.

I can't speak for jet-skiiers' ability , but the boat owners don't tend to zoom in and out. They don't want to hit some other boat. They don't want to hit rock/coral. They don't want to get tangled in someone else's anchor line, or cut someone else's anchor line.
MWC is online now

When we were at Grand Coco Bay we didn't chance it either. The boats were going slow, but the jet skiers were flying around there. A guy that we met almost got hit by one and he wasn't even that far from shore! I would definitely use some sort of marker/flag if you venture out there!

Must have been really quiet when we were there.... ....lots of boats anchored, but not many moving in and out. We felt pretty safe snorkeling, just looked up frequently.

I've snorkeled there in the afternoon. Most the boats were already out fishing. I wore a bright colored swim cap.

i have snorkeled there many times. Go 0nly when the water is calm and swim to the section of the reef that is closest to the shore. Should take no more than 5 minutes. Early morning only, before jet skis start Once you are at the reef, you can swim next to the reef with no interference from boats. hope this helps

We were there last week and were told the reef was not that great....Was told it was contaminated.....Probablly has nothing to do with the thirty boats that start up their everyday......

Coco beach

We were there in Jan/Feb and noticed that they were no pelicans or small shiners in the waves this year. Could be this building boom has overloaded the systems and polution is filtering into the ocean. I used to watch the old timers casting their nets along Coco beach and now they're gone, they must know something.

Thx for the info guys.
I guess I'll have to find another spot.
Sounds too risky for me.
