Good lord. I have no idea what you are talking about. But it sounds disgusting. The only packets we have at our McDonalds are salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup, and white vinegar. I think. We don't have 'donairs' out here- are they like subs, maybe? So maybe it means deli meat? ![]() |

While I am just as lost about the "gravy" at Mcd's as Rissask is, I feel that there needs to be some understanding of her plight related to the "Donair".
There has been a mass exodus from her locale for many years. This exodus is significant enough that when her football team (the Riders) plays here against our local squad (Stampeders) we often see a SIGNIFICANT contingent of fans wearing "Rider Green". This contingent is a hearty, fun-loving and very loyal group of people. This exodus has apparently lead to a general slowing of the ability to obatin, ans a s such experience, some of the many little things that most of Canada, and perhaps the U.S., takes for granted. That and the 'oft stated "Hey, last one out of Regina turn off the lights, eh?" is beginning to ring more an more true. I would equate portions of Rissasks home province to that of the BACKWOODS of ARKANSAS, if 'n ya know what I mean Riss..... ya gotta get a Donair. If your in town call me and I will broaden you horizons a little! As always, Your friend, Brent ![]() Last edited by B Kromm : 09-22-2006 at 10:57 AM. |

I have even had homemade moonshine from this guy near our farm when I was in high school. Oh, and once I had Hutterite wine and that stuff is like moonshine. I couldn't feel my hands after one glass. But hey, the 'mass exodus' has slowed down some..did you know Saskatoon is the third fasted growing city in Canada right now? Right after Calgary and Edmonton. All the Albertans originally from here are sick of super inflated housing prices and selling and making a huge profit and moving back here, where you can actually get a decent house for a decent price still.Sorry, I digress....WTF IS A DONAIR?? I gotta google. ![]() |

Geez, it's bad enough to have the rest of the world not understand "Canadianna", but to have a Calgary dude perpetuate outdated myths is another. If you think portions of "backwoods" Saskatchewan don't resemble parts of Alberta, well, you haven't been far from Centre Street in a while. For every Yorkton, Melville, Nipawin and North Battleford, there's a corresponding Brooks, Drumheller, Rocky Mountain House and Longview. We share a common pioneering heritage, and just because Calgary has flourished into a cosmopolitan and modern city doesn't mean it is an island unto itself. Christ, the biggest yearly draw is still the Stampede--a tribute to the spirit of the old west and pioneering heritage.
There's no doubt that Alberta has created an economic climate that has drawn immigrants from all points, but especially Saskatchewan. This growth has enabled Albertans to experience those "little things taken for granted", like donairs for example. Funny though, that I can get donairs in Regina at food courts in just about any mall, and even in my "backwood" town of ten thousand. (Though the best I've ever tasted were from a guy with a restaurant in the Deerfoot mall in Calgary). Like Rissask has said, Saskatoon is one of the fastest growing economies in Canada, *despite* our socialist government. I can enjoy the Regina Symphony Orchestra in a full season of performances, take in Mosaic (a cultural festival representative of the world's cultures), see live theatre and musical performances by the worlds best, enjoy Wascana Park (North America's largest urban park and lake), and yes, even cheer for my beloved Roughrider football team as they spank the gap-toothed led Stampeders. I can do this without the 75 minute commute to just about anywhere, without the grossly inflated cost of housing and day to day expenses, and without the choking congestion of traffic that is endemic of Calgary today. Hell, I can even leave my job and within 20 minutes can be teeing off at a gorgeous golf course *without* a tee time. Try that in the city. ![]() Ok, my rant is over. (Brent, I know you were speaking in jest, so don't take any of this seriously ok?) Time to go empty the outhouse, the missus folks are coming tomorrow. It'll be nice to see my brother and sister again. ![]() |

It is amazing how people will continue to talk about nothingness in the same way one talks about "world capitals" and "Culture" and "historic richness"..

Cut the crap Elektra. Of course Canada, especially Western Canada, doesn't have a rich and interesting history, like Europe or Asia, etc. Duh, people have only been here 12,000 years, and Europeans only a few hundred. What do you expect? 400 year old buildings on every city and town street corner? A museum packed with pillaged antiquities? We're a new country, comparitively, and so what? Seeing more history is what travel is for. Your loathing is getting boring. ![]() |

Maverick, nice one!
Yes, all in jest. Anytime I can push Rissasks buttons a little, I try. In a conversation before this thread came up, I had commented that Downtown Saskatoon was probably one of the nicest views of any downtown I had seen. Regina on the other hand........ Pssssst, don't tell, I'm married to one of those pesky Sask (Yorkton) immigrants and my Mom's family homesteaded somewhere near Prudhomme (?) if I remember correctly. |

You love me. I knew you were trying to stir the pot. Yorkton boy, that's right too. My stomping grounds, well, Indian Head/Fort Qu' Appelle.I always have to laugh when people start up the Regina versus Saskatoon thing, they are pretty similar after all. They have Wascana Park and the Legislature, we have the river and the Bessborough. Now, Regina versus Montreal, there is a clear winner there. ![]() |

Now you are really confusing me....didn't I just say we don't have a rich history, and that it is understandable since we are a comparably new country, made up of immigrants mainly? ![]() I do think we have come up with our own culturaly identity, but it is a mishmash of stuff stolen from other countries, mostly....is this what you disagree with? At any rate, we too had a nice long, hot summer here this year. And I am actually glad fall is here, I had enough heat. ![]() |
