Where do I start!??
Starbucks is marketing, Starbucks is money, it is a business. In my books it is one of those "money for nothing" things. They sell you tinted water made by some young thing with a tattoo and a pirced eye-brow that can't even do dishes. People do not know this but they buy Starbucks for the paper cup, the ambiance, the wanting to belong to a certain socio-economic strata.... it appeals to the voyeur. Those who know coffee, know NOT to go to Starbucks to get it. The best coffee I have ever had was in Jalapa, Veracruz....and "it wudnt at no Starbucks." Savy? Does this make me an idiot? I know I'm paying a lot for my coffee, but I happen to think its damn good. I'm also paying for the ambiance when I sit and drink it there. Can you explain to me how I am supposedly paying for a paper cup and "the wanting to belong to a certain socio-economic strata" when I usually get my coffee to go in my own thermal mug with pictures of my kids on it? Would that be the "daddy strata" to which I'm trying to belong? By the way, you don't ever drink any bottled water outside of Mexico, do you? (Did you know that Evian spelled backward is "naive?")I generally try not to slam people when they talk about eating at all the big touristy places on 5th. Rather, I try to just suggest to them that they may enjoy trying a few places off the beaten path and offer a few suggestions? Why do you slam me and make so many (wrong) assumptions in the process just because I happen to like Starbucks? Why does it offend you so much that people like Starbucks? What do you care? Does it affect your life in any material way? And why do you make so many assumptions about people who do enjoy Starbucks? Overall, kind of an offensive post, really...

I recommend that people read the book that Steve lent me, The Rebel Sell. It explains, perfectly, the Starbucks craze. Starbucks started off as a countercultural response to a need for "cool" coffee. Everyone wants to be cool, so obviously it caught on and expanded. Well, once something becomes too cool, it isn't cool anymore to those that thought it was cool, in the first place. They move on to the next cool thing, which will also become too cool. It is a cycle that is perpetuated by the counterculture, which says it despises commercialization.
If I explained this wrong, Steve will fix it. I ain't used to reading such deep-thinking books.

Starbucks can't compete with my Kauai Estate/Chiapas Altura/Moka Java custom blend with just a touch of cinnamon to remind me of waking up on the beach at Casa Cenote. I'll stick with Joe's for the early morning gossip and Sasta for a nice cup of cafe negra
