Cabinet fiasco

Solved at last. Home Depot offered us $500 to compensate for the damages of some cabinets (not structural), and also would have the two main ones remade. I wrote the CEO about how crappy their Rep behaved and sent out pics as well. They called and apologised That same day after getting a call from the CEO's office, their customer service people called to find out what I thought of the quality. I told them
Anyway, today I went to HD and made the decision to return all cabinets. It wasn't easy to do since they're here, and I spent MONTHS making my choices and nailing down everything I wanted, but as my mother said, that wasn't a good enough reason to keep sub standard merchandise...will get a full refund, no restocking fee (according to the KD), and will be looking at custom made instead.

On a positive note. I've lined up a good electrician, good tilesetter, and have a possible plumber and drywall person coming out tomorrow to see what I need done. We also saw the work of a cabinet maker over the weekend, and were impressed. Will be trying my hand at being my own GC, so I have no one to fire or cuss out but myself

Great decision. Our cabinets are installed, but the countertop is not on yet or the sink, etc....
I will post a picture of the complete assembly when it is done. I thought it would be done by now, but as you know better than anyone, there are more delays than I can believe.
I think you will be much happier with custom made cabinets. We are.

You went custom? What I like is that the cabinet maker lives in my state (an hour away), and he actually returns calls. He just told me that I could go from 36" to 42" cabinets (uppers) for an additional $200 That would have run into lots more with most semi-custom companies.
Would love to see your pics and I'll share mine when it's completed and before (when he starts working) so you all can see how it's going. What door style and colour did you choose?

We had an Amish man make our cabinets for the house we are getting ready to sell. He did a beautiful job and he had them done in 2 weeks from start to finish and was 1/2 of the price of anyone else. We had the wood that we had cut down from our property. We used quarter sawn cherry and they turned out beautiful. Once the countertops are installed (next week), I will post those for you to see. I'm not sure what the style of the door is, but you my know once you see the picture.
The cabinets we have in our kitchen where we live were also custom built by a man who is now deceased, but the cabinets are wormy chestnut and are just beautiful. Tomorrow I will take a picture of the cabinets in our house and post them for you. The mistake that was made then was the shelves are not adjustable, so certain things must go on certain shelves and there is no lazy susan in the corner cabinets. Other than that, perfect!
Feel free to PM me with any questions.

I just took these of my kitchen. (the house I live in). I don't know the name of the style of the doors. I provided a close up in the last shot. The other kitchen is not completed yet.

I've never heard of wormy chestnut before. Looks like very solid 'all wood' cabinets. Not anything like what you'd find in HD Did you put in full extension drawers? Is that a pantry (the tall one)?

No full extension drawers. The tall one is a pantry. The mistake that was made with this pantry is it is so big and so deep, it is hard to see what is in the back. I would recommend lighting inside of a pantry. I have those battery operated lights in there that people use in their closets. The wormy chestnut came out of an old barn in Virginia in 1986 as well as the hart pine flooring. They are beautiful cabinets. You will never find wormy chestnut in HD or any place like that. You would have to ask a woodworker to get some for you and even that may take a long time, if he could get it. I wasn't with my BF at the time this kitchen was done, so it's not perfect, by any means. I would like to have interior lighting in the pantry, adjustable shelving, under cabinet lighting, deep drawers for baking sheets, and pull out garbage cans. Another thing I'd like is two doors that have glass to show off fancy dishes.
We have full extension drawers in the kitchen in the house we are selling, but no pantry in that kitchen, it's too small for one.
There are so many things to consider when ordering cabinets. Maybe someday I'll get the kitchen of my dreams. Get yours while you can

Glad they fixed their problem.
We got our countertops last spring through Home Depot and they gave us the wrong finish (a high gloss on the laminate, when we had ordered the 'sparkle' finish). They replaced them for free and ate the cost, as they should- not what we ordered.

You can put in a lot of stuff into that pantry to make it easier to use. Have you checked out IKEA? Lots of people and cabinetmakers use stuff from the following company:
