You know, I checked out a website (please pardon me if I mention it is a Mormon Church website) that had the information on when my grandmother died, date of issuance of death certificate - her SSN AND the date of her last Social Security check.

The site is used by geneology buffs.
BTW - Not Mormon but the idea that you could find out all that info was sent to me by my brother who IS the geneology buff...

I was listening to the Kim Commando radio program and she related that because a lot of public documents with signatures are available online she has a private and public signature with differentiators known only to her. I have also have two signatures:

The refinance and investment papers: very nice and very much "my sig"

The receipt at the grocery store: must get out of here NOW, might be possessed by demons signature.

There's too many people with my name in California so they couldn't find me, even if I put in my year of birth and the town I live in they still didn't find me - two people with the same name, but not me.....hmmmmm......maybe I don't exsist!

you know, with all the discussions about tearing up documents with bank account #'s, I was surprised to see that when I do my online banking, I can "View" a check I've written to someone that they have endorsed.

It shows me the front and back side of the check--which the endorser has signed AND written their bank account number on... which means any check I've cashed/deposited has my account number written on it for that person to see.

isn't that something... i mean they have segments on news programs showing you how to safeguard your account numbers for ID theft protection... but what's the point? if someone wants the number, i guess it's just out there.... What am I missing?

Yep, anyone can use it if they're inclined. I think the calmest way to deal with the possibility of identity theft (in addition to properly destroying documents, etc) is just to get your credit history periodically. When we refied, the credit report was excellent, but showed 4 inquiries. It's been a crazy year, but we could identify all four inquiries and there were no breaches.
