Don't forget that for some people "a great meal" would consist of a frozen TV dinner and due to their "limited palet", would not know good food if they ate it. I am not refering to this individual.....I'm just sayin'.... .. |

I enjoyed the food in town just as much but the food at the EDR was nice. Although they dont have a buffet its all sit down gourmet food. I agree good food is way too objective. A few people complained about the same meals i had while we were there so i guess its up to the person and their taste buds.

To answer the question of why stay at an AI. The food is available if we want to eat at the resort. Generally, we do like to have one meal at our hotel and all the beer and drinks sounds good to me even if they are weak just will not be so drunk.
This way we do not have to carry money with us all the time. Since, this is our first time to area and I thought an AI would be a safe economical way to explore the area. The price of the resort is not expensive so an AI sounded like a good idea for the first time. Once I know the area better I should know where to stay next year. Also, I believe all beaches in Mexico are public so I believe we are able to use any beach. We just may not be able to rent a chair but who needs one anyway. Grab a beer sit on the beach sounds very good to me right now. Any way it sounds like there is plenty of beach, drinks and relaxation in the area. |

In addition to Shammy's points...since the beach at GPR is NOT good, and you are doing AI mainly for the drinks...you really won't get a chance to utilize even that. You'll be moving up or down the beach to find a nice spot, and it will be too far to run back to the GPR to get another beer.
If you're going to stay in town, my recommendation is to definitely go non-AI. We stayed at Luna Blue last year...had a great time and drank plenty...and didn't break the bank! If you're staying outside of Playa - that's a different story. AI makes a lot more sense when you're staying at the Barcelo or Copacabana. |

If you stay booked at the GPR until you arrive - you can ask about upgrading at check in, should be no problem with that. My guess is it may be less expensive to upgrade to the RPR at check in than to do it via Travelocity, but call them just to see how much more they want for the upgrade and see if they'll charge a revision fee.(BTW...shoulda used an TA instead of the Book Thyself method...they prolly would have told you about the construction and icky beach BEFORE you booked! )

Aren't the GPR and the RPR next to each other? I thought they were. So I guess my question is how can the beach be that much better at the RPR if they are next to each other. But then again maybe I'm mistaken as to the location.

They are more or less next to each other - but on opposite sides of the pier.
On one side, the side the GPR is on, there has been substantial erosion and they have put down sand bags to remedy this. The beach area is small and fairly rocky and there are a ton of boats tied up to the beach as well. ![]() ![]() ![]() The beach is simply bigger and better at the RPR - and yes, just on the other side of the pier. ![]() ![]()

We stayed at GPR because we got a good deal.....it would have to be pretty close to free to make me do it again. The hotel itself is pretty nice and I didn't mind walking across the pier to stroll on the great beach at RPR. The boats at GPR gave me something to watch while I was drinking my mango daquiris so that was OK. I agree the food is really BLAH. But there are two actual restaurants (which you have to make reservations for as soon as you get there) that are very good food. The buffet....well, it's buffet...and pretty much what you would expect. I wouldn't do it again but I don't know that I would be as critical of it as to say it was 'the worst food ever'.
They DO make a darn good mango daquiri though

As for drinks at the AI's being "weak", I've never understood this complaint. C'mon, peeps!! All you have to do is speak up and ask for "extra vitamins" in your cocktail, and **voila** a strong cocktail is made and handed to you. I've become rather intoxicated a few (too many?) times while we stayed at AI's, so if you're complaining of "the drinks were too weak", it was your own fault. Speak up!!
