Question Head Scratchers 5

1. How do you make six nines to equal exactly 100 (you can use addition, subtraction, division, decimals, etc., but you can not add any extra digits)

2. Mr. and Mrs. Mustard have six daughters and each daughter has one brother. How many people are in the Mustard family?

3. Four men sat down to play,
They played all night till break of day.
They played for gold and not for fun,
With separate scores for everyone.
When they had come to square accounts,
They all had made quite fair amounts.
Can you the paradox explain,
If no one lost, how all could gain?

4. It cannot be seen, cannot be felt
cannot be heard, cannot be smelt
it lies behind stars and under hills
and empty holes it fills.

What is it?

5. What falls but never breaks? What breaks but never falls?

6. There are fourteen punctuation marks in English grammar.
How many can you name?

7. Which bird does not belong in this group? Finch, gull, eagle, ostrich, or sparrow?

8. A magician was boasting one day at how long he could hold his breath under water. His record was 6 minutes. A kid that was listening said, "that's nothing, I can stay under water for 10 minutes using no types of equipment or air pockets!" The magician told the kid if he could do that, he'd give him $10,000. The kid did it and won the money. Can you figure out how?

9. Eskimos are very good hunters, but they never hunt penguins. Why not?

10. What common English verb becomes its own past tense by rearranging its letters?

The Official Answers

1. 99 + 99/99

2. There are nine Mustards in the family. Since each daughter shares the same brother, there are six girls, one boy and Mr. and Mrs. Mustard.

3. The men were musicians..

4. Darkness

5. Night and Day

6. Period, comma, colon, semicolon, exclamation point, quotation marks, brackets, dash, hyphen, apostrophe, question mark, parenthesis, braces, and ellipses.

7. The Ostrich. It's the only bird that doesn't fly.

8. The kid filled a glass of water and held it over his head for 10 minutes. (Does the glass of water qualify as "equipment" though?)

9. Eskimos live at the North pole, penguins at the South pole.

10. Eat and Ate.

Darn, I didn't even see these Q's go up... wasn't paying attention... I did #1 and #2 before I realized you'd already posted the answers.

My answer to #1 was this: (9 X 9) + 9 + 9 + (9/9)
