October openings and closings - 2006

As the last thread got so long I thought we could split this subject by the month.

The MM Cinema is open at Centro Maya opposite Playacar. It has 9 screens ranging from 100 to 300 seats. Let's see what happens to the small cinema in Plaza Pelicanos now and the cafes next to it.

More shops have opened up inside the centre now including a new branch for Detaglio (furniture, decorations etc).

The Lotus Chinese restaurant on 10th Avenue is 'traspaso' along with the salad bar on new 5th - which means they want to sell but are in a contract until somebody takes it over from them.

Banorte bank are opening a new branch in the new building on the west corner of Juarez and the dual carriageway. There's also a new medical diagnostic centre too.

Please keep reading through this thread as I'll add more info through the month.

Oh, we've also heard that Coco Bongo is going on the corner of Avenida 10 and the street that Santanera is on.

If you wonder what's happening to the Mayan style hotel opposite - it has new owners and will be called the Magic Blue. The outside is staying Mayan and jungly but the rooms are Euro chic - creams, chocolates, contemporary style. You even get a mobile with credit and can preselect the fragrance of your room.

You'd think there are already enough hotel/restaurant establishments with "blue" in the name already in Playa, wouldn't you??

Pipe down, you two! I have nothing against blue - my favorite color, in fact. It's just starting to get a bit confusing with all these blues.

VIPS (by Sams Club) is due to open in a month...

Centro Maya is slowly opening more shops. They hope in another month it will be much fuller. Regular buses are running back and forth now.

There's some clothes shops worth a nose around.

The large food court has only one vendor open so far! Chinese food - the owner is a friendly chap, originally from Canton, he's been in Mexico for 6 years now. The food is OK for a food court. A taco place looks set to open as a sign has been put up.

TelCel has a large payments branch set up there now.

Chez Nous, the french bakery near Chedraui, has closed until further notice. It doesn't look like they're coming back.

Next to it has opened Expert Marine, which stocks all sort of boating equipment.

Media Luna, on 5th, has reopened after closing to tart itself up. They've removed the sculpted booths to fit more tables in and painted it a washed lemon yellow. It's lost charm and lacks imagination to my mind.

The Pasta restaurant that had closed next door is being revamped. It appears to be another restaurant again and the council notice in the window mentiones the name Coral Grand, which sounds more like a hotel...

As you arrive to Playa from the south a small hill in the central reservation has been built with the words Playa del Carmen spelt out in rocks and plants. In front of it there appears to be a fountain being built.

The council has announced that a team will be filling the potholes in the roads this month.

A new interiors/furniture shop has opened called Ambience. It's on the highway on the left to the North of Playa heading towards Cancun.

You can also find a new tool hire shop another 5 mins further on.

Visiting Cancun we found and tested a new HC de Monterrey franchise. It's just the same as the Playa original in quality, price and look but without the grill fumes and smoke. It's on Avenida Coba and has parking. If you're driving West it's just after the large yellow Elektra building on the left. It's only 5 mins drive from the Hong Kong Plaza and Walmart if that gives you a bearing.

I hope they havent changed Media Luna too much. We have been going there for years and loved its breakfasts and funky ambiance.......
