Whoa Big Fella. Time to take a breath and a break. And a moment to calm down.

I don't know any ex-pat in Playa who hasn't had a "Mexico Day" which left them wondering why they ever moved here and calling into question the manners, morals and heritage of whatever native local they were dealing with. Mexico is a tough place to live..for visitors and locals alike. Mexico is not the US or the UK. It's history up until a few years ago was terrible and difficult and left it's people struggling to survive and struggling to define themselves. And given that background I think they are doing an amazing job.

Yes, there is corruption in the police force. Cops hold you up for traffic fines. On the flip side name a major U.S. city that hasn't had a police corruption scandal (usually involving drugs)? Yes, women get hassled. It is still a Macho culture in many ways. Now listen and watch as a girl in a short skirt strolls down Bourbon St in New Orleans or Duvall St. in Key West on a Saturday nite. Not much difference. Yes, there is a resentment by natives to non-mexicans. Maybe with some basis as they see us come from outside of Mexico and set up businesses, have jobs and make money they can't even dream about. And if you think resentment of foreigners is limited to Mexico, take a look at what is happening back in the U.S. right now. Or the UK.

As for laws...there are always laws. Sometimes they are solid, codified and written down. Sometimes they are cultural, understood and hidden. Mexico has both and it is hard to learn them, I know from experience. But at the same time that is one of the attractions to many who move here. I know many, many non-mexicans who move here, find work and live, all underneath the radar of Mexican immigration laws. As "guests" we expats love to take advantage of Mexico's laid back attitude ...but we have to expect to pay the piper when we end up treated like "outsiders".

Mexico is beautiful and complex in ways that non-mexicans cannot easily comprehend. No one can come here and expect to change Mexico into another place or culture. The only way to survive and succeed here is to adapt to that culture. That ain't easy but I think it's worth it. And I know you can and will. And when those "Mexico Days" happen again...there is always beer in the refrigerator at the 'Blue.
