New York does change so much...

Being back from my latest trip to New York I have to say that I've never seen the city THAT hectic and for the first time I realized that so many things change in a short time. My favourite sandwich shop near the office doesn't exist any more and while it rained cats and dogs we were looking for one of our favourite steakhouses in Soho too. It was not there any more either. Two years seem to be a long time in New York.

Still, I love that city. Even though if you have to work in Downtown it is not good to stay in eastern Midtown. In the mornings it was like a wave was going to hit you when all those people came out of the subway. I did not go WITH them but had to go in the opposite direction. I guess my boss walked behind me because in this way he could hide behind me... I've always been a downtown person and now I've seen how much more comfortable and quiet that is (this time we had difficulties in finding a hotel as our usual ones were all sold out).

Karen, I've been back on 'Top of the Rocks' in the dark. Will post some of the pics later on. It is pretty impressing up there in the night too. Ground Zero has not changed much in the past 2 years. I could see where they have found the bodies in the last days but other than that it has not changed much. Amazing that after 5 years not much has changed in there. But the only new WTC-building (don't remember which number it was, either 5 or 8) has been finished.

It was great to be back in New York although on my first morning there (before I'd even been in the office) I got the news that our North American unit has been sold. We knew that this was going to happen but I am more than happy that our timing was good enough to meet the colleagues again and being able to say 'goodbye'.

One way or the other I will be back in New York though!

Glad it was good to visit New York again! In Nora Ephron's latest book she writes about how apparent the changes are when you've been away from NYC for a length of time. The past two times we've there, Henry and I have played tour guide to an extent. I'm hoping we can drive up just for a day in Nov or Dec and avoid the whole midtown Christmas scene. I'd like to browse The Strand bookstore, walk around the Village and I know we would HAVE to get a corned beef sandwich at Katz's.

Well, to notice the changes you probably have to stay there longer than 'tourists' usually do as only then you find a certain routine and places you like etc. One of my other favourite places (Restaurant 'Sequoia' at the Seaport) still exists but when I went to the Southstreet Seaport in January I already had to notice that the 'Christmas Dove' - one of my 'musts' during every visit to New York ever since I first went to NY in 1999 was closed too. I am sad that places that I like are no longer there but I guess I have to live with that...
