4-5* resort ON the beach vs. 3-4* resort across the street from the beach. That's your price difference right there. If you don't mind walking across the street and using the beach in front of the Riu Yucatan (which BTW is nicer than the Riu Playacar), then the differences between the resorts are not huge. And if you stay at the Riu Tequila, you can use the facilities/restaurants/bars, etc. of the Riu Playacar and Riu Yucatan (except for dinner).

Riu Tequila vs Riu Playacar
I have stayed at the Riu Tequila and have talked to people staying at the Playacar and they have said the food and facilities at the Tequila were better then the Playacar and from what I saw I agree with them , you can still use the beach, less then a 10 minute walk or wait for the shuttle, I am going back to the Tequila Dec 31 because I liked it better.

Riu Tequila
Hey Syl the Riu Tequila is not on the beach , it is across the street from the hotels that are on the beach but it has its own walkway which takes less than 10 minutes to walk or there is a shuttle that goes back and forth from I believe 7a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m.. I have stayed at hotels along the mayan riviera that were along the beach and because of their set up it took longer to walk to the beach then from the Tequila , so I didn't mind the walk from the Tequila. I took a look at the Playacar and the Yucatan when I was there and to me the bars and restaurants at the Tequila were better.

I've only stayed at the Tequila but obviously spent time at the Yucatan and Playacar as a result. The rooms are all very similar - same facilities (minibar, tv, etc) the main MAIN difference is Tequila is not directly on the beach so if you're someone who forgets to take their book/music to the beach then you'll be trotting backwards and forwards. We happily spent all day down there as you can get food and drinks from the restaurants at Yucatan and Playacar. Oh and the Tequila has a bigger entertainment programme and a bigger children's animation programme.
More importantly, I don't think you can go far wrong with any of the Rui hotels! |

we stayed at the Playacar in March and really enjoyed it. We walked over to the Tequila once to check out the pool and honestly liked the Playacar better. We never even left the resort to eat at the others. The beach is close to the pool which is nice because you have to go there to get your drinks.
I haven't been away much so maybe I don't expect as much as others but was happy there. |

We have stayed at Riu Tequila and spent most of our days at the Playacar pool.
IMHO the Tequila for the cheaper price is fine.....rooms are not great.....but food at breakfast and dinner was awesome. The pool at the Playacar is a much a better place than the Tequila......and then there is the beach. I would stay at any RIU also.................. |

Actually, other than the new Palace Riviera Maya the Riu Playacar is the newest Riu in the Playacar area. It opened in 2000 & as battie05 mentioned the Riu Tequila opened in 1998. Riu purchased what has become the Riu Lupita from Occidental after Riu Playacar opened.

Ok...here we go! Hubby and I have stayed at both the Tequila and the Playacar...we have been 3times in the last 4yrs. We enjoyed both resorts tremendously. Our first stay was the Tequila, the pool was great, food delicious, animation team had more energy than the Eveready Rabbitt!
Hubby and I actually found the stroll to the beach from the Tequila refreshing and gave us a chance to take in the scenery. We never took the golf cart to or from the beach. It truly is a short walk!! Now...the reason we decided to try and stay with the Playacar is the proximity to the beach. My husband is a diabetic and happens to love the ocean, now, if you know anything about diabetes....you know he doesn't get to swim in the New England ocean waters!! Soooo we have chosen to stay at the Playacar, as we spend a tremendous amount of time in the ocean water. We found the food to be very similar between the two resorts, the Tequila is definately a more active resort! The noise level also seemed to be louder at the Tequila...which isn't always a bad thing! This past August we strolled over to the Playacar, to check it out again, and we wanted to see the new sports bar. The sports bar is pretty cool. It has the pool tables and assorted other games that are needed in a sports bar, along with the mandatory tv's. The one thing we thought strange here was that we stood at the bar(sports bar) for over 15 minutes, trying to get a drink order placed....while the bartenders ignored us and fawned over the underage kids that they were serving alcohol to. I was really disappointed in this, as it's not the usual Riu type service. Walked out to the courtyard and got served immediately upon reaching the bar. Guess we were just too old to be in the sports bar!! I will stick with the Playacar, and yes it is ready for some renovating, but it's a nice smaller resort, where you get to know the people that are working and vacationing. You can't beat the quality of the beach or pool....which is the whole point of our trip! Enjoy your vacation!Michele |
