We just returned from 2 excellent weeks at the Riu Playacar. We've stayed at all the Rius and this one is by far the more party place than the others. It was predominately Canadians and Americans (what a switch) and the entertainment staff went out of their way to ensure you were having a great time. As for getting married at a Riu, either the Tequila or the Yucatan is nice. I'm not sure what you are looking for in terms of area to be married in. The Playacar vegatation is not as mature (since it is a newer hotel) but still very nice, but you aren't getting married until January and the vegatation grows incredibly rapidly down there - unless of course you wanted to get married on the beach, then either the Playacar or Yucatan have beautiful beach areas. We were over at the Yucatan when a wedding was taking place and the area just below the main reception was used and it was very beautiful in terms of the lush flowers and gardens, they set the wedding area up very nicely. I would agree about the jungle thing but that is primarly around the rooms and the walkway from the Main building to the pool and beach area and bear in mind it is just as jungley at the Tequila. We did see a very beautiful wedding on the beach at the Royal Hideaway (next door to the Playacar)and it was set up even nicer than a garden type wedding. At all of the Rius (except Palace) the menus and resturants are identical including the menus. We ate at the steak resturant at the Playacar and the Yucatan and the menu was exactly the same. Same with the seafood resturant.
If you are looking for a more lively and younger crowd you will find this at the Playacar. The Yucatan is much more quieter and predominately German and Spanish, and the Palace is completely dead in the evening. My suggestion to you is to stay at the Playacar and plan the wedding ceremony either at the Tequila or Yucatan if you are looking for a garden style wedding..and do it much later in the day or first thing in the morning...the further away from the ocean breeze the hotter and more humid it is.
We noticed a distinct increase in the temperature from our first week (average 27-29 degrees)to our second week (average 31-34 degrees). Good Luck!
