Wow. I did not think this thread would get legs.
Personally, I think the Dixie Chicks music sucks. I hate pre packaged faux country. I also think that they can say whatever they want. Contrary to what Thor is saying, I think it is healthy for freedom of speech when more people are able to use theirs. In this case, the Chicks did not have the talent to withstand the backlash. There are many artists who have said much worse about Bush, and continued to succeed. I am in the record store on the day that REM, Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams CDs come out. Springsteen, Neil Young, Stresiand, etc. all speak out on a regular basis. They survive because they have earned the respect of the music listening world. The Dixie Chicks might want to consider that a lot of people, like me, were never going to buy their CD to begin with. I started this thread because I saw a movie trailer on TV. I guess they have made a documentary on the trials and tribulations they have been through since that day in London. Poor, poor girls. Millions of people heard them speak and then gave them the collective shaft. Freedom of speech at its best. Liberals and conservatives use boycotts. They are an effective political tool and a valid expression of disapproval. The idea that there was a conspiracy (which is what they are claiming) is laughable, and shows you just how out seriously they take themselves. The idea being that they are so important to the world that Bush needed to silence them. Give me a friggin break. Excuse me, I am going to listen to some Billy Bragg and Wilco covering Woody Guthrie songs. |

Freedom of speech includes the responsibility to accept the consequences of your words. If you say them, you should be willing to pay the price that may come. It is called conviction. Rosa Parks had it. Martin Luther King, JFK, Ronald Reagan, Pope Paul, Mother Teresa, and many others had or have it too. You cannot say something that is controversial and then whine like a little baby when someone calls you on it. If you do, your words mean little. |

I like the Dixie Chicks...but I thought their remark was very tacky/disrespectfull and had very bad timing. (just like I thought Rush's remark and Barbara's joke was). Freedom of Speech is a wonderful thing so people who make remarks in public venue should be prepared for all the shite they get back at them.
A good friend of mine burned me a copy of there latest CD...it is good imo ! Last edited by TAPPY : 10-28-2006 at 08:11 AM. |

Doesn't this whole thing just come down to the fact that no matter who you are and what you say, there are at times consequences for what you say, whether good, bad, or comfortably in the middle??
Any celebrity who's got the media's attention should be intelligent enough to know that what come out of their mouth can backfire. And whether someone wants to express their opinion on what came out of said celebrity's mouth by buying or not buying the product they are selling.... well, that's their choice too. What's the problem here?? I just don't see how this is a debatable topic. |

I can't believe that the backlash is still going on...talk about holding a grudge. Natalie was guitlty of poor timing, that's all. Pediphiles get better treatment than the Chicks have recieved over an opinion. I don't like Bush or his 'stratagies"
but plenty of tacky/distasteful remarks have been made about politicians, countries, cultures that I would support and I can't think of one that would make me hang on to a petty grudge for sooooo long. Some networks are refusing to run the ads for their movie... It's just rediculous to me. Get over it. |

They were on Oprah yesterday and did not apologize for what was said ...as a matter of fact, Natalie said if it was today, in the aftermath of Katrina, etc. she would probably say something even more controversial and still thinks Bush is a major a-hole. (in not so many words). I say, good for her to not succumb to the pressures of what 'others' think she should do or say, whether you agree with her or not.

I don't like their music.
I don't listen to their music. I won't go to one of their concerts. I won't go to the movie. I respect them for speaking out. I respect them for sticking to their guns and not backing down when a loud contingency of former fans, DJs and music industry people boycotted them. |

I am sure that some liberals have gone out and purchased the CD to make a statement of their own. In fact, I know this is true, because I heard John Kerry going on about how important the Dixie Chicks were to American music history. What garbage. There are about as important as Kajagoogoo. |

I liked them much better....when they were just about the music......when I go to a concert I just want to be entertained...I don't want to hear any political stuff
and its not just them we went to see Toby Keith a few years ago.....he was introduced by G.Gorden Liddy who went on and on for a half an hour......then in between songs Toby would go into these political rants.....agree with what he was saying or not that is not what I was there for........liked the music but next time he is in town I think I will pass |
