sales tax reduction in saskatchewan

this past weekend the saskatchewan gov't reduced our sales tax from 7% to 5%. they say this is a great benefit to all saskatchewan residents. i disagree because they simply reduced a consumption tax. a much more effective idea would be to reduce the basic provincial income tax rate thereby allowing taxpayers to keep more of their their hard earned dollars, and possibly invest these extra dollars thereby creating wealth. true this sales tax reduction will make a difference in the overall price of large ticket items such as a house or a new car but i don't believe that many low income people will be able to realize these cost reductions as they don't have the income levels needed to make these purchases in the first place. it does benefit those with larger disposable incomes because the more you spend the more you benefit from a reduction in consumption taxes, but when you have no money to spend how do you benefit????????

While you make some good/interesting points, I guess I would just be happy that they lowered my taxes.

don't get me wrong...i'm all for lowering taxes, what i'm against is "band-aid" solutions which don't help those who most need the help. this, in my honest opinion, was just a pre-election ploy by a government that doesn't have a clue what the people want or need.

I'd say our choices for a government that knows what they're doing is pretty limited . . . no matter what party you pick. At this point, a reduction in the PST is ok with me.

As for low income people spending enough to save a little on the reduction, been to Walmart lately?

I agree with the government not having a clue what the people want . To me its just an election ploy as well.

Doesn't work here. The a***oles even charge sales tax on used cars.

Yes i've been to walmart lately...the very same one you go to, and i got to tell you that walmart has nothing to do with this. in case you haven't noticed, people from all income levels shop there as there is very little choice here in this one horse town. i never said i didn't like the sales tax break, i said i don't think it is the "savior" that the current government claims it to be. just wait and see what happens when the saskatchewan economy cools off. my bet is that this reduction will be reversed very quickly when that happens.

All I am saying is that everybody (low, middle or high income) is going to save a little. It is unfortunate that there is little choice in where we shop.

When any party in power comes up with a tax break or new initiative they always laud it it as the the thing that is going to save the village, town, city, province or country. In the same light, the opposition most always cuts it down saying "we would have done it this or that way," generally withe the same result.

Well, every little bit counts....and it means lowered costs for ALL purchases that PST is applied to, not only big ticket items, so I disgree that it won't make a difference for ALL income levels, not only benefit the upper class.

You really think that is gonna happen anytime soon

...I don't think so...we are doing great, Sask is now one of the only three 'have' provinces in the country, remember.
I do agree this is a bit of an election ploy by Calvert, but we have nowhere to go but up. I think they are finally starting to realize they have to make this place attractive to big business.

I was also happy we get another stat holiday in February, 'family day'- yippee...know what that means, that means I don't have to go to work the following day after we return from Zihuantanejo at midnight- yay!
