"Normal" if you have a heart full of love for your fuzzy child which you obviously do!! I went through giving steroids to my cat, Gizmo, for two years for intestinal cancer (she'd had exploratory surgery to diagnosis it) before it was time to "let her go". And Tiggy went through radio-active iodine treatment (mucho $$) in 2005 which cured her. As most people here in the Forum know, I love my kitties to pieces. But I also know that they are CATS, not real children. And that's something you have to keep in mind when dealing with their treatment when they're sick. I've witnessed people keeping sick pets alive waaaaay past the point that I ever would. To me, that's being selfish and not taking into account the pet's quality of life.

When we sign on to being the owner (mother/father) to a pet, knowing that there might come a time when you've GOT to put the pet's quality of life ahead of your own needs (companionship, love, someone "being there") is also a part of the unwritten contract. At least it is to me.

You'll do what's best for your fuzzball no matter what. I just know it.

Wired, Max was attacked by two hunting dogs last October (what's with him and October anyway?), and he spent about 10 days at the vet's office recuperating after having some surgery to fix the damage. They warned us that he would be more introverted and clingy. Not Max. He came home, jumped on us, ran outside to pee on the fence (neighbour's dogs who attacked him), and barked like hell at them He was never clingy or afraid to bark at big dogs, so they under estimated the little guy. I so know how you felt when yours was attacked! Bad owners indeed...it's their responsibility to train and watch their animal.

Nerak, he just wouldn't quit sitting near his food bowl (empty), so we relented and gave him 1/4 cup of soft food which he promptly gobbled down. But that's it for the night. This guy is very frisky, even after surgery. 'IF' he has something seriously wrong with him, I'd never let the poor guy suffer for months/years just so we won't have to say goodbye. Just hoping he has a few more years still though...

Just catching up and saw this thread.
How is your little furry baby?
I hope he is feeling better and the news you get from the vet is good news.
Hugs to you all.

No news yet about the biopsy (it was supposed to take a week). Meanwhile, Maxx is doing much better and has quite an appetite, but he has to stay on very soft food which is driving him crazy because he hears us crunching on carrots (his favourite) and he can't have any until the gum heals. Apparently the area where they removed the tumour is the size of half a pinkie. Thanks for asking. It's been painful watching him go through this withOUT pain meds, but they won't let us give him aspirin because it will thin the blood and he'll start bleeding...or so they said.

That is a huge biopsy for a little guy like Max. Poor baby. But it's great news to hear that he is eat. Hopefully, it was just a growth.

Just wondering...could it have been an abcessing tooth? I work in the dental field, and dogs and cats can have the same decay and tooth problems as humans...weird.
( and growing up I thought that only candy caused cavities )

No, they said it had nothing to do with the tooth though she had to cut quite deep to remove most of the tumour and this caused one tooth to fall out. He's an amazing creature though. We were warned that he might be traumatised and that he might stay in a corner and hide...yeah, right Not this pooch. He's a fighter, and never once whined. He did look at us with sad eyes though so I guess it was the pain.

a dogs mouth heals quickly. i have pinned a few jaw bones and lanced a few abcesses myself. i spent five years working animals large and small, doing lab work. did they do a blood count work up? usually white blood cells give the story if cancer is the story.

hope he has recovered and moving on. scramble eggs, rice, and hamburger meet are very appetizing and easy on a pooch.

Bigdave, thanks for that info.
Our little guy DOES NOT have cancer It's a benign tumour but they said it can come back. His face is still swollen and I thinks this is happening because the little devil wants to stuff his face (literally), with food. We're having to cut back and let him eat several small servings per day instead of the twice a day biggie. Other than that, he's doing very well and is due for a check up this week. Can you tell I'm relieved and thrilled? We were just not ready to part with him though he can be a real PITA at times

This experience certainly made us realise just how much we love him and how important he is to the family. The kids were wondering about 'his' end with cancer (if the results were different) after seeing my sister undergoing chemo earlier in the year. We're elated of course and he hasn't a clue...better that way.
