Our celebration was cut short.... Max got up this morning with blood running out of his mouth. He had been making some strange clucking sounds the last two days, and I noticed his face was swollen so hubby took him to the vet this morning.
The tumour has grown back and even BIGGER this time. That's just a week ago and it grew so rapidly. The vet is saying that the pathology report might not have been correct...it could be cancer.
They told my husband that the options if it's cancer is chemo, or to remove part of his jaw. Whatever the options they sounded horrible and I can't deal with it right now. I'm so devastated that I can only remember my father worrying about Max last year when we left him to go to PDC. Then Daddy died and I never could understand why he spent so much time worrying about Max. Maybe he sensed something?

Ohhh no! So so sorry to hear that Mariposita...None of the options sounds very good for the poor little guy. Big hugs to you and your family and of course to your poor puppy.

Very sorry to hear the bad news MaripositaII. It can be very devastating to lose a pet you are close to.

I'm so emotional that I can't make any decisions or think straight. Spoke to the vet again and the news from the surgeon is that they could do surgery and remove the entire jaw area, but there is no guarantee that the tumour won't come back. This surgery 'might' buy us tops 6 months with Max. Or we can bring him home, love him, and when the time comes (which they say will be before Christmas), he'll show that it's time to go... My God, I won't ever get this close to another animal

"plasma cell tumor' - am I just dumb, or did I misunderstand this tumour thing? I thought when they said it was 'benign' that this meant we were home free. So it is a type of cancer? Apparently it's very fast growing.

OMG, I am so sorry to hear this Mariposita..
My animals are like my babies, too.
You just get so attached to them, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
If you have the money and the odds are better than 40%, do what it takes to make him better. We spent over $9,000 on our lab that had almost no chance of survival and today he is still with us and very healthy.
If you don't, you will always wonder what could have been.
If money is an issue, as it is in so many owner's case, bring him home and hold him until he is ready to go.
Do him a favor, don't let him suffer for your own reasons.
You and Max are in my prayers.
Whatever you decide, take a couple of days to do it. Think about it for a couple of days and you will know what is right.

If I may add one more thing..............
we spent a lot of money on local vets trying to get my lab better and nobody could even find out what was wrong with him.
We took him to Ohio to an internal medicine specialist for animals and they diagnosed him the same day!
Don't waste money on a local vet if you are not getting an answer quickly.
We almost lost him due to the lack of knowledge of our local vets.

I will ditto that, do a little research online so you can make the best decision for your dog. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes and if I would have just listened to my local vet I would not be following the same course of treatment that I am today for my cat. (and for the last three weeks my Frosty has not had to have any insulin shots)

Hoping for the best for you and you little dog.

Oh my gosh...what a difficult decision to make Mariposita, but I would take him to a specialist for a second opinion.

We will take him for a second opinion. I'm really so stunned by everything that I haven't been able to eat. He looks so well! Except for a bit of blood when he drank water, he looks fine and barking up a storm.

That's great that Max is raising a bit of hell. Hang in there and keep us informed.

I'm so sorry your little guy is sick. It is so hard to watch our pets suffer I had to put down my dog of 16 years last December- he was my first pup and a faithful friend.

I hope you get some good news regarding your baby. Good idea to get a second opinion. I'm sending positive thoughts your way...
