hmm, well maybe since it was my blistered feet, i shouldn't talk... but wanted to add that i did actually have good shoes on... i think it was the sand/sweat/heat/swelling that did it?? not sure... cuz it really wasn't any hotter there than it had been in Dallas all summer... I had Teva's on when i got the blisters.. then switched to some other "comfort" flipflop that i got at REI and still got new blisters in them... both pairs i'd worn in dallas w/ no issues... so, not sure what the deal was.
for arch support i like Ecco over Born... if you're splurging... but both of them are typically leather, which is less water friendly... next time i'm going to try Keens.. or Merrel... speaking of which, i need to get those now and start breaking them in before Dec! --- as for the mosquito bites.. i'm the always-get-bit type also... and i only had problems on 2 nights.. but next time i'm packing the bugspray for the evenings! |

On our last trip (in July) I brought 4 pair of my wonderful Nike flip-flops. No sneakers, no heels. I lived in my Nike flip-flops. Not sure what the style is, but they're like thick, COMFY foam!!
On an earlier trip to Playa (it was either 2004 or 2005), I brought my Tevas but couldn't wear them. The soles of my feet were soooooo tender that the little bumps on the insoles of the Tevas felt like I was walking on broken glass. I spent some ridiculous price (like $25) for a pair of designer flip-flops at the resort we were at just so I'd have something to wear. Those have since been given to Goodwill, as my Nike's are so much lighter and more comfortable. Never had a HINT of a blister from them. |

Ecco!
I've put many a mile of 5th Avenue under my one pair in the past two or three years, as well as tours like Ek Balam and never had a problem. I took just one pair of sandals the past two years, and only one pair of socks for trudging through the snow to and from home to the airport here. YWGDeb travels with a few pairs of Ecco's, like anyone will notice at midnight in the Beer Bucket or Tequila Barrel

Preceeding the aforementioned Chacos was a pair of Tevas. They were great. I had them for many years. Wore the velcro out on the strap that goes over my toes rendering them unable to stay on. They also started to smell horrible!

Another vote for REEFS!!! They are awesome for walking the streets of Playa. Now I have had good luck (no blisters ever-even wearing them brand new down there) as compared with some of the other posts I have read. I LOVE them. They form to your feet and are soooo comfy. Okay was that convincing enough? I like the "Sandy" style. There are many styles of Reefs and some are not as comfy as others, but these work for me.
Also like Teva. Think not foam, not leather Leather will rub in the humidity

I spent every vacation in the Roo with blisters on my feet from the moment I got off the plane. I brought every kind of shoe with me that I had in my closet including many different types of sandals and always ended up with bandaids galore wrapped with surgical tape...very attractive. Last summer I gave up and took my flip flops and a pair of Keens for the jungle. No problems!!! For me, the ultimate blister person who's heels peel off every summer this was the best. No more stylist shoes for me. I don't care.

I'm adding a vote for Havianna's. They are are Brazillian rubber...look like every other flipflop in the world, but I've got thin skin and every other flip flop I've worn makes a blister between my toes, and these don't ... also much more cushiony underneath, although, as I said they don't look any different that Wal Mart $1 ones. I've liked Birks and Teva's too, but I hate to step into the ocean with those $90 shoes and my Havianna's go anywhere and look wonderful...at $10-$15 I have colors to match all my stuff.
