Reef Playacar

Is it still fun to go there?
Is there a beach close to go too?

This will give you an idea about how close the beach is... and it's close enough to town to have lots of night life fun. I'll be staying there in April.

I am not so worried about the beach but if the resort is packed the pool may not be to fun. That is what i meant. I could have fun anywhere!

You will have a good time...Playa is always fun! As stated there is no beach right now (and was no beach in November when I stayed next door). You can take a cab to town for 5 bucks. Walk into town in about 15-20 min. and lots of beaches there. Many require a small fee to use. Check out Mamitas. If you are locked into the reef just make the best of it and be easygoing. If you can change resorts there are many that still have a nice beach in Playacar.

Hi guys..
Okay, so I've finally got some photos ready from our trip to the Reef from December 18-25.

Here is a photo of the left side of the beach.

Here is a photo of the right side of the beach.

And here is the stretch of non-beach in between the right and left sides, as seen from the right side.

I felt sorry for the white house, whose property runs along the Reef's. I took this photo on Christmas Eve, when the ocean was quite rough. It had been windy all night and into the day.

The rough weather resulted in a bit more erosion to the Reef's beach. Here is the right side of the beach. You can see how much more beach was lost.
Also, behind my husband, you can see the Riu's property is "protected" by some big, sharp rocks, allowing for the sand to remain on their beach, but pretty much ruling out any swimming.

Although we did not do a whole lot of swimming at the Reef, because of the poor condition of their beach, I would like to say that it did not "ruin" our vacation. Not at all. I had read a lot of tripadvisor.com reviews of the Reef and was aware that erosion was a huge problem. But we had a terrific time, despite the beach's condition. They have two great pools, and a lot of activities, so all was definitely not lost.

I would suggest to anyone who wants to have a really great beach day that they go to Tulum for an afternoon, and enjoy that beach, since there really is no comparision.

Does anyone know the status of the beach reclamation project at this time? Are they going to proceed with that.

To my knowledge - no "official" word yet.
