Reef Playacar
We visited PDC for the first time last Feb and stayed at the Grand Coco Bay. The resort and PDC were fantastic! We will be staying at the Reef Playacar next Feb. We have heard that the beach and water there is rocky, and that it is recommended that water shoes be used there. Is this true?

Here are some pictures I took in august. There are some rocks at that part of the beach, but you don't need shoes. The only disadvantage is that the beach is very small at The Reef.
I'm gonna look for some extra pictures I took last august. ![]()

I think Michael has the dates for when the beach reclamation project (like that which was done up in 'cun) will sweep through this area and bring it back to 1985 conditions. (beers will remain at 2006 prices, I'm told)

![]() I believe the environmental impact study is to be completed by February, then based on that outcome a decision will be made to proceed (or not).

Doug,
Well, unfortunately (or fortunately), there aren't so many beach activities at the Reef, except the marina activities. There is no room for beach volleyball, for example. So there won't be that much that you lose. I heard the beach in Playa del Carmen is still pretty nice, so maybe that's an option. |

I was gonna say the same thing. There is NO beach at the Reef now so what activities would be affected? If they begin work to improve it (couldn't come soon enough if you ask me!), at least that's a step in the right direction!!

Oh well,
We are booked to go to the Reef with four other couples. We will find enough fun stuff to do if the beach is gone. Hate to think we will have to pack our beach gear and haul it down the line to a better beach, but our wives are strong. Can anybody who has been to the Reef recently look at the previous pictures on this thread and tell us if the beach there is about the same? If so, it is dueable to me. |

If it would mean that the chica from Battie's picture would show up, I would go to the Mega or Walmart, buy a shovel, start digging and build the beach back up myself.
But in addition to the other information from the always-helpful Shammy and others, I think that there's another way to tell that something is going on at the Reef. Funjet is offering screaming deals from Denver to the Reef Playacar and to some place in Cancun. You'd figure with the winter they've been having, they'd raise the prices instead. |

![]() As of now, there is nothing below the retaining wall level other than...the ocean! The steps going down cracked and crumbled and the retaining wall is being undermined by the waves. Things change but no doubt, there are some Playacar hotels in a bit of trouble right now!
