We have owned a condo in Playa del Carmen for 3 years now and go down about 6 times a year. We have never felt the need to go to Cancun to grocery shop. San Francisco on 30th Ave has always had everything we needed. Now there is a brand-new, huge Chedraui on the highway just south of Benito Juarez. It's sort of a Mexican Super Walmart. Between the two, you should be quite well supplied.
They both have a selection of beer and other alcohol, but if you want a wider selection you can stop at Covi out on corner of the highway and Constituyentes
