Travel arrangement puzzle! Need suggestions

We have our vacation to Playa booked and just found out our youngest has a soccer tourney scheduled in San Diego which will overlap our travel plans by a day. No problem I thought.Ha! We need to fly from Minneapolis to San Diego on 3/30 and then head to Cancun on 4/1. After our time there we want to fly home to Minneapolis on 4/8. Travel agent said we can't do this????? Said we have to fly from Cancun back to San Diego and then home to Msp. Really???? Said it had to do with customs(???).Anyone ever heard of this???

Yeps happened to me also. It's probably because if you buy a return ticket it has to return to the same place... I flew Iceland-New York-Mexico City-Cancun (all because of Wilma) and had to do the same when I return... But I just bought a new ticket from Cancun-New York... too long time to go to Mexico City..

I was just able to fly PHX-IND then IND-CUN then CUN-PHX. It was considered a stop-over in Indy. This was on AA with frequent flyer miles. AA offers a stop over for no additional points. Would think you could do it if you were buying the tickets. Might only work if you use the same airline all the way.

yes, I think it is when you buy with the same airline.. If I use Icelandair I can have my tickets the way I want within europe.. it's like a special plan..

Thanks everyone. Heard from our own board travel specialist and it looks like this will be very difficult to do. Not impossible but difficult and very expensive. Guess we'll break the news to youngest she'll have to suffer the consequences and miss the soccer tourney.

I don't know anything about the logistics of doing this on an international flight but I tried to do something similar when I was flying to Florida last year for a meeting right before Christmas. I thought it would be nice to fly home to Maine via Virginia so we could visit our family for Christmas but the cost was so prohibitively high that we bagged the idea. For whatever reason, our TA couldn't make this happen for less than triple the price of flying Bangor-Philly-Fort Lauderdale-Philly-Bangor. Just thought I'd throw that in there in case it helps someone. The holidays and the lack of major carriers in Bangor probably had a lot to do with the high price.

Just curious whether the answer to your question really involved customs or not. I'm guessing it's just because a multi-city trip is so costly with the airlines. I've flown into one city and out of another numerous times when going to the states from here, but it's usually on an airlines buddy pass, so it's easier to arrange multiple cities/destinations/origins. Never a problem with customs, though.

Did you have a suspected terrorist on your plane?

It is a very friendly, very small airport. Nice people- too expensive to fly out of.

Oh, so you were actually SUPPOSED to land in Bangor. We usually just get stopovers from flights with suspected terrorists (like Cat Stevens) or occasionally we get some drunken partiers that piss off the flight attendants.

Glad you enjoyed our city We have nicer places than the airport if you ever make it back (Iceland is definately on my travel list- along with a million other places in the world- but I've heard Iceland is just beautiful.)

If you ever come to Iceland (new york has direct) then I can recommend many places that you must see hope to see you in icy Iceland sometime
