I saw Bart (?) and Bobbie from Paamul yesterday; they were going to go through Bones' things and see if they could find a contact. They also were talking about reporting his death to the US embassy here. I don't know what sort of luck they will have, though. I don't know for sure that Bones' travel docs were up to date.

I will hoist one for Bones tonight. Had the opportunity to converse with him in Pamul in January he was a good character and doing just what he wanted to do. Gotta respect that. Yes, less color our world today.

"Bones" may have originally lived in Ohio, but I think that Minneapolis was his last U.S. location. I can't remember him saying much about his U.S. life, nor did I press him.
A year ago, he did a lot with Tom Lee, and did work for Ricco at Mom's. He survived the huricane at Ricco's jungle cabin - and then walked all the way into town. They may offer some information. I also know that he did work at Treetops. A sad way to end! |

Update: Still no luck on finding any family, though friends/neighbors and the Embassy are all working on it. Once that is done (whether successful or not) there will probably be some kind of service for Bones down here. It's not likely his remains will be shipped out of Mexico, but more possible that there will be a cremation and his ashes scattered as part of the service. Of course, if family members are found, it will be up to them. If not, or if they choose not to help (which seems likely according to what he's told people about them), donations may be requested to cover the costs of all of this.
I'll let you know when I know more. |

We just heard from Dave Goslin at Paa Mul of Bones' passing. Oh man, it hurts. He was a really great guy with a huge heart. He had a tough road in this life but he paved it over with a smile. He did work for us and many others in Paa Mul and always undercharged us considering the joy and kindness he brought to the job. His heart had betrayed him before and he almost died on at least two other occassions. We all tried to get him to quit smoking, drink less, put a damn shirt on to cut the Yucatan sun, and so on and so forth but he knew better. He knew he was on short time and he was going to enjoy what was left and enjoy whoever was with him. His mother died young from a bad heart and he told us his was worse. We don't know anything about his family except that he didn't care to talk about them. There will always be a spiritual presence on that piece of sand that was his Paa Mul digs. The blaring of his music that was the most tasty mix of everything from the 50's to the day of his death will still blow in the trades from his place to ours. Hasta luego friend. We're really missing you a lot.

Some good news... Bones' brother has finally been located. A picture turned up of a man who resembled Bones and names and other info were on the back. Turns out the two had different last names, so all the previous searching would have never gone anywhere, looking for someone with the same name. Phone calls were made, and the brother was finally located in Indiana. He'll be flying into Cancun soon to take care of the arrangements and will contact other family members. This is a big relief for everyone concerned down here. I will let you all know when a decision has been made regarding a service, etc. Thanks for all the PMs and concern.

Thanks Susie,
I had thought that it would be difficult finding relatives. I was going to suggest that you use the VIN and licence plate information from Bones's truck, and work through the Minnesota Police. There may not have been any family ties there, however. It's great that you found someone! It would be of interest to find out more about Bones. I'll be in Playa late this next Tuesday for two weeks. I'll look for you at all the usual places - you're easy for me to identify. If there is any kind of a collection for Bones, I certainly would like to add an amount. See you in a few days. - Bob Last edited by rohausser : 02-11-2007 at 08:50 PM. |
