I like your version of the story. Actually, what many people believe is that Juan Diego had gone to el Tepeyac, a hillside, to pray for his uncle who was very ill. The Virgin appeared before him to make a deal. If a chapel was built at that site, she would grant him the miracle of healing JD's uncle. Pope Paul made him a saint in 2003 (I think).
Some people think that the Spaniards invented this appearance in order to convince the indigenous peoples to convert to catholicism.
