The best thing you can invest in is a passport,we stayed for 5 weeks in the spring and that is all we needed. If not sure ask your travel agent or go on the Canadian Goverment website about travel and they will have all the information you need. Have a great time,Playa is a wonderful place.

I think the operative words are 'under 18'. However, Bren's advice still might be a good first step. I'm suspect that some document that attests to permission from your parents or legal guardian will mix in somehow.

You bet you do! Signed by your mom and dad or the legal guardians.

On another note, I can't beleive any responsable adult would allow you to leave home by yourself, going to another country.

Just have to say that "very mature" people usually don't get into a pissing match with someone they don't know over a silly comment. This IS a discussion board and if you post a question here, you best be aware that people will "comment" back - regardless of whether that comment is positive or negative. If you don't care to hear what others think, don't post a message on a very public board.

And as an FYI...at the very least, you'll need a notarized letter signed by both of your parents with the dates that you'll be gone and even the flight numbers of the airline you're flying. And......not sure what the situation is in Canada but you may actually find it difficult to locate an airline willing to transport you since you're a minor traveling alone internationally. From here in the USA, VERY few airlines allow an unaccompanied minor to fly internationally - and it's not wise to book a ticket AS an adult because you do have to show your passport when you check in at the ticket desk (under age = denied boarding). You best check with whatever airline you plan to use. Airlines that do allow unaccompanied minors to fly have pretty strict rules about how this is done - one of which is to have the name of the person who will meet the minor when they arrive at their destination (by non stop flight only) written down on the authorization letter. The minor will be released to that person ONLY. No person to get the minor - the minor does not leave the airport and is sent right back home.

Ok, now I'm confused. Last April we took a friend of our daughter's who was 15. She booked on her own, had a passport and met us at airport. We had a letter if necessary but at no time was she asked who she was traveling with when she checked in at airport(Northwest) or through customs at either end. May be a fluke but in this time of supposedly increased security no one ever questioned her or us.

Better safe than sorry, North. Though the policy may be in place, it tends to be somewhat arbitrary as far as application goes. The individuals involved can be about as strict or lax as they choose to be, depending on the lengths of the line ups, how bad or good a day they're having, how polite the passenger is, the colour of your shirt, etc.

Depends on who you get in customs I guess. We brought my 17 year old niece with us last week and we were asked for the notarized letter allowing her to leave the country/enter Mexico with us. Thank god we had it.

Get the notarized letter, especially if you are by yourself. They will likely ask for all proper documentations

And just to clarify once again - a minor who is traveling with an adult who is not their parent is not the same as a minor who is traveling unaccompanied. There are MAJOR differences between the two.
