Nice to hear the stories; we'd never quite gotten the "jist" of the holiday, but every time we've been in Mexico this time of year, which has been quite a few times, we always see pilgrims running down the highway with torches, processions with floats depicting the Virgin appearing to Juan Diego, pilgrims on their hands and knees making their way to the cathedral (Puerto Vallarta), etc., etc. in the days proceeding the holiday.
Not sure if the actual day is December 10th, 11th or 12th but it is definitely one of those days.
On Sunday just after dusk, returning from Yal-ku/Akumal there was one little procession just to the south of Playa heading into town consisting of a police car with lights flashing and siren howling, a truck just ahead with torch runner out in front, with fireworks shooting off the top of the truck.
I guess there was a big parade in town a while later but we missed it.
