... how crazy people are...
Like I wrote in another thread last night they had to put to sleep the mom of the little elephant which was born in the zoo in Cologne in march. This is sad and I really feel for that little elephant girl who lost her mom. BUT one local newpaper put up a condolence book in the internet and you should read what people are writing there... 'Poor girl, time will heal all wounds' 'We are all there for you'... HELLO???????? This is about an elephant and elephants can't READ.... am I the stupid one here???

I did see a thing on one of those nature shows where elephants actually seemed to mourn their dead...

This 'condolence' book is really funny. There are some entries from children and I can understand that they are really sad. But from adults? This is ridiculous. Talked to my sister and she said she was reading it in the office this afternoon and when she saw some entries she was laughing out loud... |

I agree that is weird Andrea, the comments from adults.Although Judy is right, elephants are supposed to be quite intelligent and I am sure the baby elephant is affected negatively to some degree by it's mother dying...it's just not the way we humans understand grief and suffering. Syympathy notes to an elephant is just strange.

I was waiting on It'smy to come in here and start talking about Bambi's mom or dad being shot and how that results in lifelong emotional attachement disorder and a a higher risk for PPD after their first birth...or something....

Elephants have a very tight social network and the baby has been adopted by three other elephants already (they were taking care of her even before her mom died). They expect two more elephant babies within the next 4 months so then there will be other little elephants to play with. I guess Marlar is taken care of.
This morning I read in the condolence book that one woman was on vacation in Thailand and had just read the news and she wrote was crying while typing... I know that in the djungle book elephants can talk to Mowgli but even setting up a condolence book for an elephant is weird...

It's ironic, considering the elephants instinctively know how to take care of their own. |
