Tried the google also didn't know much more after reading. This type of problem is certainly important to people who live in Playa and property owners. Hopefully the problem will be solved quickly and no property owners damaged financally.

I was talking to a couple of friends this morning, and the word on the street is more confusing than the article in the paper. I am sitting this one out.

I would like to clarify one thing - As an owner of a condo in the building formally known as "Blue ******" *** HAS NO CONTRACT, never has and never will. He has nothing... That is why we as owners cannot understand why officials let this theif get away with what he is doing!

P.S. I was there when *** was pushed into the pool... it was a beautiful thing. We even have pictures! Someday we will show all of our great supporters in Playa. Thanks all

I hope all property owners in Playa take heed of this bizzare incident, and I hope the local powers wake up and realize property owners should not be at the mercy of this kind of crap! Again, my best wishes that things work out OK for y'all. I think eventually things will get back to normal, but it's a crying shame this happened in the first place!

Ok, I'm done translating the paper article, but I did not edit names. If someone wants it, just ask. I gotta tell you, these writers and editors of the news papers really need a few grammar courses. These ran on sentences go on for miles thus making it really hard to translate. Not to mention saying only one thing different in 4 different paragraphs.

Owner's Response to former *BANNED* Hotel

I am an owner of condominiums in the former *BANNED* Hotel and I am appealing to all the decent people of Playa del Carmen to support us in our quest to combat the theft of our property. Each and every home owner has a legal title, paid Mexican taxes, and through our ownership and subsequent rentals, promoted the town we love. The individual who has perpetrated this grevious act thinks he is above the law and he can do whatever he wants. I cannot understand how the city officials can allow breaking and entering, assault, and other illegal acts. This act by this thug will drive business and new developers away form Playa. Once the newspapers in the United States and Canada get this story, it will be terrible PR for anyone doing business there. His proported documents are fake. How much he paid individuals at Por Esto is yet to be determined, but the story is a lie. He has no contract, period. He was fired many months ago, and has not paid a dime to the owners in over a year.City officials, this is a plea for justice. I hope you do not allow a non Mexican citizen to threaten, assault elderly people, and illegally seize property of rightful homeowners. Please stop this criminal from hurting innocent people and ruining the reputation of Play del Carmen. For any local citizens, I hope you speak loudly with your dollars and think twice about whose buisness you want to support and whose you do not.

I feel really terrible for those of you going through this. Have you sought legal counsel yet? Best wishes.

However, we do mean the reputation for Playa as well. We know builders in the area and they have persanally told us that this is hurting their business and the area as well.
No kidding.......while I do not yet own property in Playa this type of activity has me wondering if I ever will .......and between Wilma and the Bacelo incident many Canadians who are not familiar with Playa are getting the impression that the Riviera Maya is a dangerous place and are seeking alternative destinations. Better hope CNN doesn't pick this up....they picked up the prison break in Cancun recently but this kind of report (with machine guns involved) could lead to people (especially families) saying to their travel agents "Anywhere but there"......we went through that with the SARS experience a few years ago and it caused a lot of suffering in tourist related businesses.

We've been coming to Playa for a long time and own a condo not too far from the banned place. I truly think this is something out of the ordinary and not representitive of Playa at all. Nevertheless, now is the time for the city fathers in Playa to take decisive action to prevent this kind of wild west behavior from taking place in the future. Playa has a bright future once this mess is cleared up.

Here is an actual account from an owner that we there at the scence. They are retried British citizens. Other owners they mention are retired European citizens.
Message was:
T** siezed the building back this morning (Saturday Dec 16)
I was out and returned to have goons with guns refuse me access. None had uniforms on but when I challenged them one of them shoved a badge in my face which read Agent Federal Quintana Roo. They manhandled the Larsens out of their unit in handcuffs more or less throwing Mrs Larsen, screaming, down the stairs. They even threw Preston and Nickie out of their apartment(they are Mexican citizens and have lived there for seven years). Roy Larsen was bleeding from the handcuffs. My wife, Charlotte, was swimming and was not allowed into our apartment to get any clothes. (We had to go to Mega supermarket to buy her something to wear). All our valuables and posessions are in out apartment and we are not allowed in. They are changing all the locks and T**īs men carried all Helgeīs papers off to the *BANNED*.

I called the police. They came and the first question they asked was "do they have guns". When they were given the answer "yes" they retreated round the corner.

So thatīs Mexican law. Legal owners in posession of their titles and peacefully occupying their own apartments can be manhandled and thrown out on the street with only the clothes they stand up in (or their bathing suit)!

Bad Situation

I am one of the owners of one of the condos in question. Here are the facts.
I paid for the condo in full in cash and received title years ago.
We have not been paid since the 1st of the year for any rentals of the unit.
We, and my son, have been denied access to our units since the first of the year.
We have spent thousands of dollars trying to regain possession of our unit in the last year.
The owner of the ****** offered a contract with terms that were totally unacceptable to me, in such that if accepting the contract I would never be able sell the unit and recoup my investment.
I am baffled that the Government of Mexico (Playa del Carmen and Quintanaroo) cannot see how much value there is in sales in real estate to their state, and how damaging this kind of situation is to the whole industry.
I love Playa and the residents/workers there, and am happy to have invested in that part of the world.
*** told me in person that he thinks all the Mexicans are dishonest and theives and steal from him all the time, and maybe thats why he feels he is justified in pulling off a stunt like this.
