US soccer team disqualified from tourney in Japan?
I picked up a Latino newspaper today so mi esposa can practice her Espanol.
I was intrigued by a headline thanking the US for their ridiculing remarks. The article was in Spanish and I had my wife translate it the best she could. Seems like the US was diqualified for their motto "We Hate The Japanese", and this allowed Mexico to move up to 4th place. Is this true? Are we way off base? Can someone with access to the non-American media please fill me in! Gotta love the blind spot the American media has toward soccer/futbol

OK, OK, I am not under any illusion as to soccer threatening baseball or the NFL or NBA or whatever in terms of popularity in the States, but now I'm beginning to think, Rita, that you are really just tempting me to respond to your posts! I mean, hey, did you miss a little thing we like to call Sctx's World Cup 2006 Thread?!?!? Because you know, that racked up virtually 1,000 replies and virtually 10,000 views over 63 pages just this past summer! And there was a considerable point for Americans to be interested in, in the end, as they were the only team in the entire tournament the winning Italians failed to beat (even when playing half the game with a man advantage!). So I think you are the one spoonin', now... But on the main question, I also have heard nothing and could find nothing about any such alleged motto or problem regarding the U.S. team playing in Japan (though I did accidently run across additional articles re the passing of Lamar Hunt here and here without even trying!). Do tell if you find something... Steve Last edited by ryberg; 12-23-2006 at 07:33 PM.. |

Sorry amigos, back to the original topic. It was in El Conquistador , a Milawaukee Latino Newspaper:
The tease on the front page reads "Gracias America por ridiculicar l futboa mexicano". The headline on the main article is "America, gracias por el ridiculo" There is a picture of a bucket of fried chicken with the caption: Pocas ocasiones en el pasado recente un equipo habia dejando tan mal prardo a todo futbol Mexicano. America hizo un papelon en una competencia avala por FIFA y recibe burlas de todos lados. I do not know if this is the US World Cup team, or who, just hoping someone can fill me in on the details! It's not the US national team.
It's a Mexican club team called Club America, otherwise known as the Zopilotes de Amierdica. Otherwise known as the Diving, Whining, Cheating, Plutocratic Bastards Who Are Not Fit To Hold The Jocks Of My Beloved UNAM Pumas. You see their yellow shirts all throughout Mexico and of course, in the US. They are the second most popular team in Mexico. For some unknown and unjustified reason, my wife likes them. But she also likes White Zinfandel and disco. Here's Karen in her jersey. ![]() The newspaper that Mexivoof read was mad because Club America lost in the 3rd place match of the World Club Championship to an African team. The World Club Championship was held in Japan. The media in Mexico and the Spanish language media in the US usually have vastly unrealistic expectations of how Mexican club and national teams will fare. The actually expect the Mexican national team to beat the US national team in matches held at sea level. How cute. Here's the report on the match that started this thread. African teams are quite tough and usually feature players have have experience in top European leagues. People may or may not like soccer. All I have to say is that soccer found us a bar on 10th with 12 peso Coronas. Scoreboard, baby. Last edited by Juanito; 12-24-2006 at 12:54 AM.. |

![]() Instead of a regular response here I think I'll just follow your advice and consider the source, and high-road this one. I mean, it is Christmas, after all. And anyway, spoon me once, shame on you, but spoon me twice, shame on me, right? So what's up with your family, Manitou??? Steve Last edited by ryberg; 12-24-2006 at 04:48 PM.. |
