Thanks again for all the good thoughts. One last vent, we had moved my mom out of her house and into an apartment about 5 years ago. The owner of her apartment building wants her stuff out by Jan 1st as he has a waiting list of people waiting to rent his apartments. That means we have to move all her stuff tomorrow (and it's alot of stuff) and have the funeral Friday. What ever happened to nice, compassionate people? He said if we wanted more time, he would have us pay another month's rent and he'd keep the security deposit. We don't know if he could legally do this but we've got it in our minds to do it now so we don't have to deal with him later. What a scrooge.

I am so sorry for your loss. What a shock for all of you. Take comfort in the arms of your family. And know that there are so many wonderful people who have you in their thoughts.
As for the nasty apt. manager - they don't really care. It's all about the dollar. You may want to check your states landlord/tenant laws and find out if his keeping the deposit and charging you for the whole month is legal. |

What I don't understand is the reference to the security deposit being "kept". Again, there should be specific reference to it in whatever lease/TAW agreement was signed upon move-in. By Massachusetts law, the landlord has 30 days to return the security deposit after the tenant has vacated the premises, and if any $$ is held back for damage or unpaid utilities, a full accounting needs to be provided by the landlord stating exactly how much was withheld and why. Just because the manager has people "waiting in the wings" for the apartment should have no bearing on how soon the apartment should be vacated. BK.... I'm so sorry that all this is coming down on you at once. If paying the rent for January isn't an issue money-wise, I would think you'd certainly have the right to retain the apartment for another month and not feel so rushed to get this all done so immediately. As long as the rent is paid on time, the apartment should still be rightfully "yours" (i.e. your mother's). |

The above is your link to the MN landlord/tenant laws. All states differ. I have several units that I rent and would never stoop to the tatics mentioned, but I don't have apartments. The link above will give you information and contact numbers to get answers to your questions. |

I just wanted to say again how sorry I am and to remember that landlord is putting VERY negative energy into the universe. I really believe that "what goes around, comes around"! He will have to answer for this one day
Take care of yourself![]() |

Beachy, so sorry to hear of your loss...particularly difficult at this time of year. Take this time, every year, to celebrate her life and her contributions. Look for her smile every morning in the mirror. She'll always be there.
