Im sorry to read of your loss. Im thinking of you and your family today. Im sorry the landlord isn't a very compassionate person. He'll see one day when he is in your shoes.
There is nothing easy about packing up someones life. All the memories that came back.
God Bless! Take care of yourself and know that we're all here for you!

Wow... sorry to hear about the landlord mess! That really stinks. It took me two years to finally clean out my mom's house, that was too long I know, but it was the hardest thing I had ever done.

That means we have to move all her stuff tomorrow (and it's alot of stuff) and have the funeral Friday. What ever happened to nice, compassionate people? He said if we wanted more time, he would have us pay another month's rent and he'd keep the security deposit. We don't know if he could legally do this but we've got it in our minds to do it now so we don't have to deal with him later. What a scrooge.
What a cold, insensitive bastard. I'd pay the extra month just to have the time to grieve and handle the clearing of her belongings properly. But there's no way he should be able to keep that security deposit.

Best wishes to you and your family during this time.

Also, venting here has been proven to be healthy sometimes.

Beachy, so sorry for your loss. I had not read your post when I posted mine and we have been traveling - we are in Pinehurst N.C. -, anyhow just wanted to tell you I meant no disrepect, I just got to a computer or would have posted sooner. Despite what a certain negative person might have said I am actually a nice guy! Again, my sympathies on your loss, Peace Cos

So sorry for your loss, Beachy. You're in my thoughts and prayers. I lost my mom suddenly too, and my dad is so lost without her. It was the hardest thing to go through her things, and she had a ton of clothes. I'll be thinking of you having to do this so soon. We waited a couple of months and it was still hard. Hang in there...and we're here for you if and when you need us.

I packed up my mother's clothes about six months after she passed away (my father was still alive and living in the house at the time), and I cried my eyes out the entire time. It was a very difficult thing to do. I kept a few items that were special to me and will never part with them.

My thoughts are with you, BK. Sending warm hugs your way*~*~*~*~*~*

So, we busted our butts today and got everything packed up between making arrangements and crying our eyes out. I have to say it was really hard at first but when it was done it was actually a relief. We rented a U-Haul and boxed up everything. We called the landlord and told him we'd be out by the first and wanted to let him know where to send the security deposit. He said even though he'd told us he'd return the deposit if we were out by the end of the month, he meant NEXT month, the end of January. He said that my mom's lease had a 30 day advance notice to terminate her lease so he wants January's rent. He said we can apply her security deposit towards her January rent and pay the rest. What a great guy! He's an idiot if he thinks we're giving him any money. He can sue the estate for all I care. My sister ended up hanging up on him. We're meeting with moms lawyer tomorrow so you can bet this will be brought up. We'll still have to go through all of moms stuff but at least it's out of that apartment building.

Wow!
This is what I would do....
Contact a lawyer (which you will have done).
Start documenting when I have talked to this landlord, and what he has said to me.
Ask the landlord for a copy of the signed lease, or ask the lawyer to ask him for the lease. (Hopefully, the lawyer has your mom's copy of the lease. It would be interesting to compare the two.)
Only on the advice of the attorney...contact the owners of the property, and let them know what has happened.

Best of luck...

I was just going to be a lurker tonight, but this has me so incensed I can't stand it!!! Hopefully the attorney will tell you tomorrow that this nasty landlord no longer has a valid contract. All states differ. But as Bonny says, document everything. Time, conversation, who was present, everything. And good luck. I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this. It makes me want to cry and scream all at the same time.
