If you're a frequent visitor to Playa, you must know some of the local dogs. The ones that escort you back to your hotel room? Patiently wait for you at your door, will eat anything you give them? Many of these dogs are abandoned (Playa is a transient community) and link up with tourists to get by (not unlike many locals) Due to recent leash laws in Playa, these former beach dogs need real homes as many have been picked up never to be seen again. Some applaud this, but this is a laid back beach town and the dogs were around before the leash laws, so it's quite sad that they suffer due to Playa's growth and tourism. Many have disappeared...have you noticed?

Steve and Terri of La Lavanderia and I have been talking about this for months now. They have taken in several strays already (word spread in the doggy community, so the persistent ones got through the door). They could use help with vet expenses. As an animal lover, I have been willing to donate time and money to this cause, but we need some help getting started - the local vet has offered a bulk rate discount on surgery (spaying and neutering).

A good start would be vet care, flea collars, etc. Any suggestions on how to get started? Would you like to help us? Do you have any supplies to donate? Time? Money? Expertise? Help!

Melissa~
I would like to help, as I always feel for these dogs when on vacation. We are on our way down--arrive Saturday morning--for a short stay. Would you prefer that I bring some supplies, such as flea collars? Or, would cash make a bigger difference now? Could you please tell me where to make my donation while I am there?
Thanks for starting this thread.
Sunny

Thanks Sunny. Both cash and flea collars, (Advantage for dogs and cats even better) would be great.

You can bring your donation to La Lavaderia. 22nd & 10th (the other side of Constitutyentes). Ask for Terri or Steve. They will be pleasantly surprised! I'm also often at Atomic on 8th/10th if that's more convenient for you. Thank you!!!

Thanks again...please introduce yourself too.

Hi Melissa,
I don't know the name of the organization, but there is one, I think from the states that comes down and runs a free spay & nueter clinic. They have one every year in Akumal and a group just finishe done on Isla Mujeres.
All that's needed is a vet who is willing to let them use his facilities. They also use many volunteers to help out. I have a friend who was just a recovery room nurse on Isla for a week.
I'll see what I can find out for you.

Melissa~
I am sooooo sorry I missed you while I was there! I did not forget, nor have I forgotten. I will do something for those dogs, hopefully sooner than later. Just wanted to bring up the subject again. I will either try to send some stuff with my family, who will be there in the next couple months, or bring some things myself when I am there next.

Thanks Sunny. My boyfriend witnessed 10 being rounded up with lassos last week - beyond heartbreaking. There are less and less in Playa every week, so let's do our best to keep the survivors strong, healthy and loved with our without homes. I have a friend coming next week to bring some supplies, so our grassroot effort will make a small difference soon. In addition, there is a local vet that I would eventually like to set up a Mascota account with, so any ideas and/or would be very helpful. Thanks again. Melissa

I will be visiting Playa for the first time in early April 02. I have heard wonderful things from family members that haves been there. While I do not have any substantial amounts of time or money to donate to the homeless dogs' plight, I would like to help in some way... let me know if I can be of assistance during my short stay. --April

Melissa,

Where are Steve and Terri from? I'm just curious, because I used to work for a couple by this name at a coffee shop in Minneapolis, and I heard recently that this coffee shop was sold. Could it be the same people? That would be crazy!!!

Unfortunately lots of stray dogs in Mexico are being used for medical experiments (trying out new medicine, treatments etc.). Since using dogs for these kinds of experiments is illegal in the US or Europe, these poor dogs are the victims of medical science. They are injected with all sorts of ´poison´ to measure the effects....

I hope you will have enough resources and help to be able to help the remaining dogs there, but the best thing would be to fight at the top and thus prevent the strays from dissappearing.

Good luck,

There is a wonderful organization from the US called Yucatan Animal Rescue Foundation - a fantastic organization that is working to provide vet. care and spay and neuter the countless dogs and cats in the Yucatan. Their web address is: http://www.yarf.net. They need money more than anything to finance their work so send them a donation - at: YARF; 14610 Columbine Circle; Sedalia, CO USA 80135. If you want to do more contact the Executive Director - Susan Bigelow at q.roo@juno.com. Tell her Nancy Moore from Minnesota told you to write to her!

I tried to get to the Yarf site and it wasn't live. We are considering a trip to PDC in May -- let me know what you will need most then. (In won't feel so bad about leaving my dog at home for a week, if I can help some of his Mexican cousins!)

Leaving for PDC on May 5th for a two week stay. I would love to help you guys out done there, let me know if what I can bring from Canada without having trouble at Customs ect. I was actually watching a news report about a month ago regarding a Canadian group that visited the Maya Riviera area (not exactly sure where) and needed sponsers to accompany stray dogs that they were trying to export back to Canada because the dogs were unable to be placed on the planes and travel without an "owner". Anyone heard of anything like this in the area?
