It depends on the time of year you go. If it's high season..then the north beach, north of the Coco reef resort...no chairs or loungers though...bring a blanket. If in low season...all the beaches are great.

Certainly I am not going to cross any secrecy clans and name locations. But if you do some research in the read more section, that's a start.
If you like Playa for the nightlife, nothing on the coast is going to replace that. I agree with the idea of going north to coco reef for some "space".
Otherwwise, hop on the collectivos and head south for the day.
A mapchick map (www . cancunmap. com) would be a huge help for you.

I kinda like Tulum AND Akumal (although AKumal Bay isn't exactly secluded)....it IS quieter than Playa!
We're going for 2.5 weeks in June, and plan to do 5 days in Playa, 5 in Akumal, and the remainder in Playa.....they are REALLY close (20 minute drive), but feel SOOOOO different!

Don't forget Puerto Morelos. Quiet town with beautiful reef-protected beaches and great dining. Also if you have a vehicle, a short trip past El Cid will provide you with completely empty beaches for your relaxation pleasures.

Check the cruise ship schedule. On days with no (or few) cruise ships, Cozumel should have some uncrowded beaches.

Check xqzzme's trip report for more info.

i always go to the beach in playacar, just before Fisherman village....its wide and clear and there's NOBODY there all year round...of coruse its a free beach, so no umbrellas ( I suggest you carry one with you), and no bars/restaurants...but so much quiet............................ which is what we really need, ain't it?

um- hum, I think Xpu-Ha (I like saying it) will be my destination, it looks so laid back, and quiet.
I figure 2 days in Akumal/Tulum, 1 daytrip to Xpu-ha, 5 days in Playa. We may have to check out the North Beach also as the 7 of us love to explore.
