Thought this article was interesting. I have been working on reducing my percentage of fat and building muscle. I can tell you that it takes significantly more work at 60+ than it did when I was youger ~ but I'm getting there....
Boomers Should Add Muscle Before It's Too Late ![]() ![]() WEDNESDAY, Sept. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Strength training can help people build muscle mass to assist in the fight against the debilitating effects of old age until they reach 80, a new study says. After that, not so much, according to the authors. The Ball State University study, sponsored by a grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health, found that while six men in their 80s did get somewhat stronger, their whole muscle size and fiber size did not grow during a 12-week training regime. "We know that there is accelerated muscle loss as we get older," Scott Trappe, director of Ball State's Human Performance Laboratory, said in a university news release. "The best way to keep our muscles from shrinking is through resistance training, which allows our body to maintain muscle size and strength as we go through our 60s and 70s." Trappe said aging eventually causes the loss of "fast-twitch" muscle fibers, reducing the ability to produce the explosive movements that allow us to move our feet and arms to keep from falling. The concurrent loss of slow-twitch muscles, the large ones found in the legs, thighs, trunk, back and hips, weakens posture as well. Together, these losses make it harder to balance and maintain an independent life. "At this point," he said, "I would advise people to actively engage in some sort of resistance training once they hit their 60s. From our study, once you hit the threshold of 80, that may not be possible." A 2003 study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, estimated U.S. health care costs directly attributed to sarcopenia, the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, exceeds $26 billion. Indirectly, sarcopenia has contributed to a doubling of home health care and nursing home expenditures to $132 billion annually. Alright, well, I've done this before, but darn it, this time it will be different!
I leave for my Christmas trip in 78 days. I know I won't get all the weight off that I'd like to before then, but I can get some of it off. I'll be going to Curves 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) on my lunch hours. My roommate also brought home the Wii Fit last week, so I might give that a try, too. |

hi alicia..i like curves because its 30 minutes out of my day...i go 3-4 times a week at the same time..its on my calendar!! the my trak is alittle more challenging you have atag you put into each machine and the point is to have green lite vs. orange..you work harder on the machines to make it green and you go around machines 11/2 times instead of 2times...it working for me...it took awhile to get results.. but i feel better too!

One issue with a Curves type place is that once you are able to do the top level of resistance/weight, that's it - you can't progress any further. If you stick to something like Cybex machines or free weights, you can continue to challenge yourself. For that reason, it might be better to join a standard gym, plus there are usually lots of different classes to take - from the simple to the extreme. If the gym has a pool, even workouts in the water are great. The fact remains of course, that doing something is better than doing nothing, just wanted to point out one of the small negatives of doing a Curves kind of routine.

2 days ago, on my 62nd birthday, I had my annual physical, flu shot, etc. and my mammogram.
While the technician was working with me for my mammogram, she casually asked me, "Do you work out?" I replied that I exercised daily, but didn't actually "work out." Then she asked me how old I was....my answer - "62 today." Then she said, "You have the body of a 20 year old." OMG! What a GREAT birthday present! I'm in good shape after a full year of dedicated, daily exercise and watching my diet. Body of a 20 year old? Well ~ not exactly, as my skin no longer has the elasticity of somebody 42 years younger than me, BUT her comment sure made my day! ![]() She went on to ask what type of exercising I do, where I do it (gym or home), etc. She says that she needs to get on an exercise program and seeing me gave her some inspiration to get going....

I use an in-home DVD exercise program, "Walk Away the Pounds for Abs." I do the 3 mile walk, which also uses a belt with resistance cords for an upper body workout 3 days a week. 3 days a week, I use another in-home DVD program with a small specialized exercise machine called "Leg Magic." On Saturdays, Mike and I go biking for about 10 miles.
I've been working in daily abs crunches using an exercise ball so that I don't hurt my back. I have some small weights at work and use those to work on my arms when things are slow. I also have a small stair stepper machine with resistance bands at work too....hop on that and do a couple of hundred steps several times a day while working with the bands. Over a year's time, I have lost 40 pounds and REALLY toned up my body, plus I have much better stamina. I have also lowered my bad cholesterol and increased my good cholesterol. The trick is watching what you eat and being faithful to DAILY exercise. For me to remain faithful, I learned that I have to make it convenient for ME, which means NOT paying for and driving to a gym.... It's ALL good!
